Summary The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Pipefitter Helper. The Pipefitter Helper will function under the Facilities Maintenance Service. Responsibilities The duties of the position may include but, are not limited to: The incumbent will assist the Journeyman Pipefitter (WG-10) by performing the simpler and more routine duties of the trade. The Pipefitter Helper is required to learn the common and most typical tasks of the trade so that he can assist the Journeyman worker. Occasionally, the Pipefitter Helper performs more difficult work under close supervision. The Pipefitter Helper will be required to perform water flushing of Medical Center's plumbing fixtures to assist with VHA Directive 1061, Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Legionella Disease and Scald Injury from Potable Water Distribution Systems. Assists the Journeyman Pipefitter in the assembly, laying, or hanging of pipe by lifting, carrying, and handing tools, fittings, and equipment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Pipefitter Helper assists in making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the Pipefitter Helper to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The Pipefitter Helper frequently assist in handling, lifting, carrying, and setting up parts and equipment that weigh up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Occasionally, the Pipefitter Helper may assist in lifting and carrying items that weigh over 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
