Summary

This position is located at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System, Engineering Service. The incumbent conducts duties as a journeyman level Plumber-Pipefitter Leader, to include installation, modification, repairing and replacement of parts new and old for steam lines, steam fitting, fabrication, hot/cold water systems, steam traps, tubing, pumps, valves, sewage systems, plumbing systems, patient related equipment, welding, and some electrical.

Duties

* Maintains, installs, fabricates and repairs all types of steam and air trap unit heaters, radiators, convectors, flash tanks, condensate pumps, hot water generators, and air compressors.

* Plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.

* Obtains needed information or decisions from the Supervisor on problems that arise during work processes.

* Provides information to the supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.

* Ensures safety and housekeeping rules are followed, that machines are operational, and tools are properly used.

* Provides on-the-job training for subordinates as needed and recommends employees for formal training to improve skills.

* Maintains reports and records for the Plumbing Shop.

* Serves as a member of the campus water committee.

* Repairs, modifies, maintains, installs, services, and performs maintenance and preventative maintenance on medical gas, air and vacuum distribution systems and equipment, and on hot and cold water and steam distribution systems and equipment, including piping, lagging, hangers, expansion joints, various types of valves and control devices.

* Maintains, installs, fabricates and repairs all types of steam and air trap unit heaters, radiators, convectors, flash tanks, condensate pumps, hot water generators, and air compressors, solar panels.

* Tests, maintains, inspects, repairs and calibrates a wide variety of complex pneumatic controls and/or sensor devices.

* Repairs, installs, maintains and performs preventative maintenance on all types of plumbing fixtures and equipment, including commodes, sinks, whirlpool baths, basins, lavatories, drinking fountains, etc.

* Maintains, repairs and installs other equipment, systems and apparatus' such as heating and ventilating systems and ductwork, irrigation systems, sewer systems, fire sprinkler systems, fire hydrants and post indicator valves.

* Independently reads and interprets specifications, blueprints, sketches, schematics, building plans, and equipment manuals, and installs equipment and utilities as required by these documents.

* Incumbent maintains, adjusts, and re-calibrates timers and computers on lawn sprinkler systems. Performs tests after completion of install, seating, hooking up, etc. to ensure proper operation of equipment.

* Incumbent is responsible for requesting the purchase of materials, tools, parts, and equipment necessary for maintaining all structures inside and out from the Supervisor.

* Knowledge of various types of disposal and utility systems, and understands how equipment is installed and operates.

* Incumbent is thoroughly familiar with the national plumbing and gas codes.

* Knowledge in operation of power and hand tools including welders, brazes, cutters, pipe threaders, grinders, saws, sewer machines, jack hammers, stud guns, and soldering equipment, including silver solder, and other power and hand tools and equipment common to the trade.

* Knowledge and ability to use gauges, meters, and other devices for testing water and steam pressures, temperatures, air balance, etc., including the knowledge and ability to inspect, repair, test and calibrate a wide variety of electrical or pneumatic sensors, gauges, meters, controls and operating devices needed to keep equipment and/or systems functional and in good operating condition.

* Complete knowledge of different types of materials and piping systems and ability to determine which materials are safe and proper for use in different situations.

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 7:30AM - 4:00PM - Tour of duty to be determined by supervisor based upon facility needs. Subject to change based upon facility needs

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent maybe required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, under buildings, dark places, manholes and above ceilings. Some systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, knell, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, carries and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds or more.

Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside and the incumbent is subject to be dirty, dusty and greasy. Sometimes incumbent is required to make repairs and installations in bad, smelly places, outside in cold and hot weather. Thew incumbent works with high, medium and low pressure steam, hot water, contaminated sewage and potential electrical hazards and frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and infections. During inclement and stormy weather, employee will be called to work in any hazardous conditions that may exist, such as snow and ice removal and storm drainage cleanup.
