The Department of City Planning (DCP) in Pittsburgh is dedicated to shaping the city's future through innovative and sustainable planning practices. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for residents by developing and implementing comprehensive plans that promote equitable growth, vibrant communities, and resilient infrastructure. We focus on revitalizing underutilized spaces, improving land use, and fostering community engagement to create economic opportunities and improve living conditions across the city. Through collaboration with local stakeholders, the DCP leads initiatives that drive strategic development and ensure Pittsburgh remains a dynamic, inclusive, and thriving urban environment. The program has been successful in advancing the careers of VISTA members, who are given opportunities for professional development through classes, conferences, etc. 70% of VISTAs have gone on to positions at community non-profits, while 30% have pursued higher education, often supported by the end-of-service education award. Member Duties : As a VISTA member, you will spend your first year researching best practices and surveying local groups to identify gaps in current programs, guiding the development and enhancement of vacant land initiatives. Collaborating with the Department of Community Planning (DCP), you will launch two new initiatives aimed at improving land use and community engagement. Your efforts will strengthen local resources, revitalize underutilized spaces, and foster community involvement, ultimately addressing poverty by creating economic opportunities and enhancing living conditions. In the final stage, you will establish a marketing and education system to effectively communicate these programs to the public.
