Under the supervision of the executive director of development, and in concert with other gift officers, the gift planning officer creates and implements effective strategies designed to interest, engage, and secure a wide range of gift planning prospects and donors to support capital, programmatic, research, and education funding opportunities.Education & ExperienceBachelor's degree in a business related field and five years of gift planning experience. Graduate or law degree preferred.Certifications, Licenses or Registration Required: N/AKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesAbility to plan and execute a planned giving strategy; knowledge and skill in the effective use of planned giving techniques; ability to market those techniques to foster giving to UMMC; excellent interpersonal , oral and written communication skills; outstanding organizational and time management skills; ability to write clear, grammatically correct, structured, articulate, and persuasive letters and other communication materials; deadline driven, with a commitment to excellent customer-service and the ability to independently drive projects with multiple stakeholders; ability to learn appropriate levels of information about a broad range of health disciplines and interdisciplinary areas. Ability to think critically. Ability to maintain confidentiality on behalf of philanthropic donors and medical center colleagues. Understanding of major issues and trends in philanthropy. Possesses superior knowledge of gift planning vehicles.Responsibilities
  • Uses best practices to manage a portfolio of local, regional and national gift planning prospects and donors; identifies, evaluates, cultivates, solicits, and stewards prospects and donors to include UMMC in their estate planning. Complies with established medical center and development office customer service standards.
  • Prepares articulate, tailored, gift proposals; adept at utilizing gift planning software. Develops and implements both annual and major gift strategies for individual donors and prospects.
  • Develops and implements marketing strategies for gift planning donors and prospects. Produces appropriate collateral materials.
  • Manages relationships with financial advisors to encourage gifts through clients, as appropriate. Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serves as primary contact for gift planning related activities.
  • Responsible for implementing gift planning software and marketing strategies.
  • Produces small events tailored to gift planning cultivation and stewardship.
  • Successfully works with outside professionals, such as legal counsel and financial advisors, to implement agreements and supervise litigation. Maintains current and comprehensive donor files, both electronic and hard copy.
  • Collaborates effectively with other gift officers to ensure that all possible gift planning opportunities are achieved.
  • Speaks engagingly about gift planning opportunities both one-on-one and as a speaker at donor/prospect events.
  • Adheres to the model standards of practice for the charitable gift planner and keeps up-to-date on planned giving tools and tax laws.
