POSITION SUMMARY:

Refinery Value Chain Optimization has openings for the position of Planning & Optimization Engineers supporting the South Region. This position will report to the Regional Planning Director - South. The candidate must have the ability to work in a team setting with a wide variety of professionals and handle multiple priorities and requests. The candidate will bring a positive attitude and will be highly motivated with strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. The candidate also will have the ability to communicate complex concepts concisely and effectively for stakeholder alignment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates the commercial aspects of refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
  • Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics. Develops and communicates strategies that capture missed opportunities and closes production optimization gaps.
  • Assists in collaboration meetings with the value chain to discuss both local and regional economic drivers.
  • Conducts detailed analysis of buy-or-make options, considering factors such as cost, quality, supply chain implications, and market dynamics. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to gather relevant data and insights.
  • Assists in developing decision-making frameworks and presenting findings to stakeholders.
  • Analyzes historical refinery data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to validate data accuracy and completeness. Assists in developing backcast models and scenarios to evaluate past performance and identify optimization opportunities.
  • Conducts project support cases independently under supervision.
  • Collaborate with Commercial (GFVC and CPVC), Refining, and MPLX organizations in the development and execution of regional value chain operating plans to maximize value to MPC
  • Assist in the development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of various modeling and optimization tools and processes, including forecasting, lookback and post-audit tools and processes
  • Utilize optimization tools and processes to collaborate in cross-organizational teams to optimize feedstock selection, logistics, operating plans, and product distribution
  • Develop an in-depth of understanding of regional value drivers, and optimization mechanisms across the value chain
  • Coordinate the development of the five-year business plan material balance and support project justification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering (Chemical Preferred) required. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
  • Minimum of three (3) years post-degree experience in Technical Services or Economics & Planning preferred.
  • Previous Linear Programming (LP) modeling experience is required.

LOCATION:

  • Houston is preferred but if applicant is at a South location (Garyville or Galveston Bay), relocation may not be required.
  • Relocation to Houston will be considered if candidate is outside of a South location.
