About this Opportunity Brunswick County Public Utility is looking for a Utility Plant Maintenance Mechanic to perform maintenance and preventative maintenance at our Northwest Water Treatment Plant facility in Leland, North Carolina and other related facilities. Brunswick County's Northwest Water Treatment Plant is a 24 million gallon per day (MGD) drinking water treatment facility located in Northern Brunswick County near Leland, North Carolina. This facility is currently being expanded to 48 MGD and will be adding reverse osmosis as part of the water treatment process.While exercising initiative and independent judgement, the Utility Plant Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, disassembling, reassembling, installing, testing, and running various machines, and equipment (with a focus on hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical components) to help ensure the delivery of a safe and potable water supply to the County. Other work includes:
- Maintaining and operating the sludge dewatering process and disposing of dried sludge.
- Documenting equipment repairs and inspections.
- Assisting with the maintenance of parts inventories.
- Responding to emergency repair calls as required.
The Utility Plant Maintenance Mechanic reports to the Water Resources Superintendentand is considered and ESSENTIAL Employee position under County Policies. Career Ladder Brunswick County Public Utilities utilizes a career ladder advancement program for those individuals seeking to make a career working in the water and wastewater services field. Starting salary based upon certification level and experience as outlined below.
- Mechanic I (no certification required) - $18.25 - $24.64 per hour
- Mechanic II (NC AWWA Grade I Maintenance Technologist) - $19.16-$25.87 per hour
- Mechanic III (NC AWWA Grade II Maintenance Technologist) - $20.12 - $27.16 per hour
- Mechanic IV (NC AWWA Grade III Maintenance Technologist) - $21.12 - $28.52 per hour
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma (or GED) and experience in a water/wastewater treatment or other industrial facility; OR equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver license is required.
- NC AWWA Maintenance Technologist certification is highly preferred.
Physical RequirementsMust be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including motor vehicles, backhoe, 3-ton trucks, tractors, numerous pumps, tractors, lawn mowers, generators, water pumps, etc., and electrician's and mechanic's hand tools. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
