POSITION SUMMARY

POSITION SUMMARY:

An employee in this position performs a variety of entry level and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment at the water and/or wastewater treatment facilities. This position performs all work under supervision of the lead worker and/or the maintenance supervisor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

* Participate in preventive maintenance program for plant equipment, machinery and related facilities including maintaining preventative maintenance records and schedules.

* Perform routine mechanical and electrical maintenance activities on equipment including lubrication, inspection and replacement of parts.

* Diagnose, troubleshoot, update and repair malfunctioning plant equipment; maintain, repair and overhaul treatment plant equipment including blowers, pumps, motors, compressors, valves, drive units, hydraulic units, chemical feeders, pneumatic equipment and gearboxes.

* Operates a variety of shop equipment including welding, drilling, grinding and sawing equipment.

* Skillfully use of hand and power tools.

* Must be able to drive and operate a vehicle to travel as needed.

* Perform pipefitting; install and repair air, water and chemical piping systems.

* Participates in facility maintenance; maintain and clean buildings, repair doors, windows, ceilings and paint as needed.

* Operate a variety of heavy equipment including loaders, backhoe, cranes, forklifts, tractors and mowers as necessary.

* Works on-call and on call back.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

* High school diploma or equivalent;

* One (1) year work experience at a water or wastewater treatment plant and/or in an industrial maintenance setting;

* Or equivalent education and/or experience.

* Must have or be able to obtain a Class 1 Maintenance Technologist Certification.

* Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

* Knowledge of methods and techniques used in maintaining and repairing water and wastewater plant equipment, machinery and related facilities.

* Knowledge of lubricants used in plant equipment.

* Ability to identify, use and care for tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of the treatment plant.

* Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.

* Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to perform medium work frequently exerting up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, kneeling, lifting, having manual dexterity, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, shouting to be heard above ambient noise, and walking. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to analyze data, work with color, determine accuracy, maintains records; operate computer; operate motor vehicles or equipment, and inspects, assembles, and fabricates parts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and mechanical operation including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposed to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding, exposure to chemicals/fumes/odors/dust/mists/gases, poor ventilation, and oils. The employee may be required to wear a respirator depending on the situation. There is also exposure to raw sewage which is subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Job duties also require working on-call and on call-back.
