Positions operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, test, and calibrate mechanical and electrical equipment providing heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning, and electrical distribution; advise on renovations and replacement of equipment; and initiate energy conservation activities.Illustrative TasksOperates, maintains, and repairs steam and hot water boilers, water supply, and return systems, electronic and pneumatic combustion, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) control systems, forced or induced draft fan systems, chiller systems, and other refrigeration equipment.Operates computers that control boiler operations, auxiliary equipment, and HVAC systems.Conducts boiler, HVAC, and water systems testing, analyzes results, and adds chemicals to maintain proper system functions.Balances air distribution systems, and maintains proper air temperature, humidity, freshness, and flow quality.Cleans, inspects, and maintains boilers, by performing chemical cleaning of equipment, repairing brickwork, replacing tubes, and maintaining boiler combustion and emissions.Performs chiller maintenance such as the cleaning of condenser tubes and evaporators, and the maintenance and repair of pumps, air compressors, steam systems, cooling towers, motors, and variable frequency drives.Performs maintenance and repair on various water and sewage pumping, filtration, and treatment equipment.Cleans, maintains, and repairs HVAC systems and equipment, calibrates controls, performs air testing and chemical treatment, and replaces air filters.Responds to mechanical, electrical, or plumbing calls; troubleshoot and coordinate necessary repairs.Maintains computerized energy management systems; troubleshoots problems; and identifies and replaces faulty equipment and devices.Identifies, recommends, and develops energy conservation projects and initiatives.May handle various types of hazardous materials; and respond to incidents having potential environmental impact and/or safety concerns, such as chemical spills, oil spills, and blowouts; implement evacuation plans in emergency situations.May maintain right-to-know libraries, respond to inquiries, assess problems, and provide advice regarding incidents.May operate high or low-voltage electrical distribution systems, steam, diesel, and gas turbine generators, transformers and switch gears, load centers, motor control centers, panel boards, emergency power and lighting distribution systems, motor generator sets, and uninterrupted power supply systems.May supervise subordinate staff, including Plant Utilities Assistants, Facility Operations Assistants, contractors, and other trades staff.The SUNY Purchase College is considered to be the employee's work location. An employee can be assigned to work in any area(s) of Purchase College (ex. dorms, academic buildings, non-academic buildings, etc.). Assignment(s) can also be split to include multiple work areas.QualificationsMinimum QualificationsEither 1. Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force;Or 2. Must have been an enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard OR possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard;Or 3. Must have been an enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army;Or 4. Must have been an enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy; Or 5. Must have a Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) and have been a qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer, or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine;Or 6. Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC);Or 7. Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License;Or 8. A Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering;Or 9. Four (4) years of full-time hands-on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facilities, computer applications of digital energy platforms, and building analytics and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment;Or 10. Four (4) years of full-time hands-on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment;Or 11. An associate's degree in HVAC AND two (2) years of qualifying experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facilities, computer applications of digital energy platforms, and building analytics and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment;Or 12. Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) OR completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college AND two (2) years of qualifying experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.Position is Open Competitive. Candidates must take and pass a NYS Department of Civil Service exam for a Plant Utilities Engineer 1.Valid/Unrestricted driver's license required. Candidates may be required to work overtime.The Heating Plant is a twenty-four (24) hour operation with rotating shifts. Position works a 5-day work schedule with 2 pass days (may include working Saturday and Sunday, holidays, and providing coverage {including emergencies} on the following shifts: 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm, and 11:00 pm to 7:00 am).
