TITLE: Plumber DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Engineer Shop, Facilities Department - Elsah CampusORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Chief EngineerWORK SUMMARY: This position requires journeyman skill levels in the plumbing field. Installs, maintains, and repairs water piping systems, all plumbing fixtures and appurtenances following recognized procedures and techniques of the trade of plumber. WORK PERFORMED - ESSENTIAL ACTIVITIESRepairs and maintains water piping, soil waste and vent piping for all plumbing fixtures and appurtenances as per the plumbing codes of the State of Illinois, as well backflow preventers, and lawn sprinkler systems. Repairs and maintains plumbing systems for all toilet rooms, laboratories, mechanical rooms, swimming pool, kitchens, and demineralized water distribution systems, safety eye wash and deluge shower piping systems; underground subsoil drainage, sewer, acid waste piping and dilution basins; fire hydrant repair and campus water main distribution systems; and exercising water valves for domestic and fire systems.Installs plumbing piping systems as well as piping revisions for the remodeling and additions to the various buildings of the campus. Inspects work site to determine method and place of installation, and determines tools, equipment and supplies to be used. Plans, maps, lays-out, fabricates and assembles piping and fixtures required. Transports materials, tools and equipment to the work site and installs and/or repairs piping system.Shares Labor Day and Closed Campus Rotation responsibilities with other crew members, approximately four to six times per year. Position is subject overtime as needed. Performs related duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
- Current plumbing license in the State of Illinois.
- A working understanding of the State of Illinois plumbing code.
- Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector certification or willingness to obtain.
- Knowledge of plumbing piping systems and their maintenance.
- Knowledge of the uses and application of materials for the work to be performed.
- The ability to read blueprints, plans, and specifications.
- Skill in the proper use, application and installation of copper, steel, brass, cast iron and HDPE, PVC, ABS and other types of plastic piping as well as various sanitary waste piping.
- Experience and knowledge of HVAC and electrical systems or the ability and willingness to obtain said training.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITY
- Respond to Service Requests in a prioritized and expeditious manner.
- Provide functional plumbing systems that (a) meet state and local codes; (b) meet the college's standards; (c) support program needs for students, faculty, and staff; (d) ensure the safety of all personnel and visitors; (c) use natural resources responsibly and in a manner that promotes their sustainability.
- Regularly look for, identify, and report functional deficiencies or substandard plumbing fixtures appurtenances and within the context of the planned maintenance system so that corrective action may be planned and executed in a timely manner and if needed included in the deferred maintenance list.
- Plan and follow an efficient and orderly workflow so that costs are minimized. Orders stock and maintains inventory.
- Maintain relations with end-users by providing well-maintained facilities and information on planned maintenance activities and unplanned emergencies.
- Identify and implement possible improvements that will reduce operating costs, improve services and result in a more efficient operation.
- Work cooperatively with other fellow crew and community members to maximize operational efficiency.
- Works with the in-house computerized work order system by inputting and retrieving data on a tablet or computer.
- Proficient computer skills for periodic duties such as creating estimates, online trainings, and inventory management.
OUTCOME OF WORK PERFORMEDPlumbing systems of the College are maintained, so that:
- The health and safety of the campus community is ensured.
- Programs are not adversely impacted.
- College assets are maintained and not put at risk.
- Operational and functional deficiencies are reported and corrected.
