GENERAL ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Plumbing Department performs systems diagnostics, installations, repairs, maintenance, and preventive maintenance at all school facilities; Responsible for other areas of concern not normally related to the plumbing trade including Fire Protection, swimming pool operation, food service equipment repair and maintenance, and athletic field irrigation systems. Assumes primary responsibility for the safe condition of all plumbing systems including but not limited to pipes, drains, and plumbing fixtures in the facilities owned and/or operated by the school district.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Assists with instruction of custodians and maintenance workers on proper methods or procedures related to new equipment or emergency onsite shutdowns
* Assists with examination of district-owned facilities for purposes of maintenance and preventive maintenance
* Accurately orders and accounts for material and labor relative to assignments
* Assists with maintaining safety and code requirements
* Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase, and maintains district-owned hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials and supplies
* Other duties may be assigned by immediate supervisor
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES IN THIS POSITION:
* Respond to all appropriate e-mail as normally occurs on a daily basis
* Ensure that our trucks, tools, and equipment are properly maintained
* Attend any applicable meetings regarding new construction, job progress, problem solving, custodial education, etc. that pertain to plumbing
* Know the entire plumbing system well enough to have a general course of direction to keep the system ever-improving
* Monitoring, maintenance and/or repair of:
o Plumbing fixtures - Toilets, sinks, urinals, showers, gang shower systems, drinking fountains, emergency showers and eye washes
o Pumps - Hot water circulation pumps, pressure boosting pumps, and pool pumps.
o Piping -Water, waste, and vent piping. Repair clogged sewer lines due to vandalism, grease, and tree roots. Repair leaks in water lines due to aging galvanized steel water pipes and drains.
o Swimming Pools - Maintain high school pools in working order year around. Change pool pumps and filters. Note: We have completely rebuilt two of our school's pool filter systems from the ground up.
o Backflow prevention devices - We are certified to inspect, test, and repair devices owned by the school system.
Science labs - Maintenance of hundreds of lab faucets, eye wash stations, emergency showers, natural gas connections, and air valves in science classrooms.
o Roof drains - Check and keep open hundreds of area roof drains which can become clogged with leaves and other debris.
o Parking lot drains - Same as above.
o Water heaters - Maintenance, repair, replacement, and testing of between one and five water heaters per school including booster heaters on kitchen dishwashers.
o Culinary and food service equipment - Maintain equipment such as; dishwashers, steamers, kettles, can openers, meat slicers, food disposers, hose reels, conveyors, ovens, and mixers of all sizes.
o Consumer and Family Science, teachers lounges - Maintenance and repair of appliances, sinks and drains
o Ice Makers - Maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance of ice makers. Shared with HVAC Department. Replace filters on district icemakers, culinary equipment such as steamers and combi ovens
o Athletic Fields - Start-up, summer watering, and winterizing of four underground sprinkler systems.
o Field houses - Start-up, put into summer operation, and shut-down and drain four unheated field house washroom facilities.
o Valves - Maintenance of thousands of valves for water, gas, and air relating to our systems.
o Gas Leaks - Fully equipped to respond to, locate, and repair gas leaks. We always arrive before NIPSCO to reported gas leaks. Shared with HVAC Dept.
o Maintain repair records, preventive maintenance repair records, parts and operator manuals on all equipment, maintain copies of invoices for parts and contracted repairs
o Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) on all chemicals used in the plumbing department
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
* High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
* Valid driver's license with good driving record
* Successfully pass the expanded criminal background check and drug test
* Member of Plumbers Union (Preferred)
* Journeyman Plumber
* Certified in back flow prevention
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
* Ability to maintain a good working relationship with all school administrators, head custodians, contractors, and associated staff including the ability to listen and effectively communicate.
* Ability to cooperate and collaborate respectfully with all supervisors and other craft foremen to ensure a smooth running Maintenance Department.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the community
* Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

* Ability to read and evaluate blueprints, if necessary
* Ability to keep skills updated by reading publications common to the plumbing trade
* OSHA, ADA, CAD and AutoCAD skills are desirable
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Candidate should be physically capable of successfully performing the essential functions of the position.
* Employee must show full range of motion in neck and trunk
* Employee must have appropriate shoulder strength to do the daily work. They will also rotate their hands from supine to
prone positions.
* Employee must have proper grip strength to use a variety of tools such as wrenches or saws
* Employee must have the ability to carry their tools from the truck to the worksite
* Employee must have the ability to climb a ladder multiple times during the work day to work on trouble spots
* Employee must be able to position their body and hands to work at different levels
WORK ENVIROMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays and non-household dust. The employee may be exposed to noxious fumes and odors, and/or bio hazardous waste products. The employee is required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated or as needed. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Frequently the employee will work alone and occasionally will work irregular or extended hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.
