The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.Position SummaryA Plumber is a position in the Facilities Operations department providing high quality and effective work that provides quick response to emergent issues and house calls throughout the Columbia University-Manhattanville Campus (CUMVC) as well as the preventive maintenance on the various plumbing systems on the campus. Independently or under limited/minimal supervision and/or direction; troubleshoot/diagnosis, inspect/round, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, equipment, and machinery in good workmanlike manner while maintaining a high level of safety, reliability, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.Responsibilities* Respond to various plumbing related calls throughout CUMVC.* Work alongside and assist other personnel, including licensed personnel, in completing assigned maintenance and work orders.* Maintain, repair and operate system equipment, auxiliary systems and utilize computer monitoring systems while working independently or under limited supervision and direction and in accordance with sound engineering practices.* Basic troubleshooting of plumbing equipment and plumbing systems.* Perform general maintenance, repair, and inspection of campus plumbing equipment and plumbing systems.* Work in conjunction with other trades on preventative maintenance and servicing of equipment and systems.* Provide guidance, direction, and on the job training to all junior personnel in the proper procedures of operations, repair, and maintenance.* Replace and align motors, pumps and bearings.* Replace various types of valves and piping, and pack valves including but not limited to steam valves, domestic water valves, and pressure regulating valves.* Perform basic rigging.* Process hot work permits and perform necessary fire watch procedures and inspections.* Process paperwork including but not limited to work orders, inventory, and preventive maintenance forms.* Perform work tasks, report deficiencies, and maintain and complete daily records of labor and materials used during work tasks via the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).* Maintain completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of the work and work orders.* Continually and urgently communicate with supervisor regarding any apparent operational deficiencies or system malfunctions.* Work with other disciplines and management to proactively solve complex, multi-discipline problems.* Must perform any duties assigned in an emergency as determined by management.* Attend and participate in all departmental trainings and meetings.* Attend and complete relevant on?the?job training as required.* Ability to perform all tasks and duties related to Plumber - Level 1 position if required.* The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the types of work that may be performed. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required of personnel so classified but rather a description of the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification.* Perform all levels of repair and preventive maintenance on all plumbing systems including domestic water, hot water, chilled water, sprinkler, standpipe, waste/sewer water, storm water, acid waste, condensate, air, natural gas, laboratory gases, and vacuum.* Assist other plumbers or tradesmen as required/directed.* Locate, repair, replace, and/or test drain (roof, floor, area), waste, and vent systems.* Perform repairs/replacements, testing, and inspections of various types of plumbing valves.* Install, repair, replace and/or troubleshoot basic plumbing fixtures, without direct supervision, including bathtubs, shower stalls, lavatories, sinks, water closets, urinals, related valves and faucets, and backflow prevention devices.* Install, repair, and/or test eyewash stations and emergency shower stations as required by ANSI.* Install and/or inspect different components of a DWV (Drain-waste-vent) system.* Utilize soldering, brazing, and fusion welding techniques in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems.* Operate specialty tools of the plumbing trade including but not limited to hand dies, taps, and freezing tools.* Read and interpret plumbing drawings, diagrams, and schedules.* Install, diagnose, and/or repair pumps, sumps used in fire, waste/sewage and storm water systems, and associated controls.* Assemble water pressure booster systems and recirculating systems using pumps, storage/expansion tanks, associated controls, piping, and fittings.* Diagnose and repair water supply and drainage piping, water heaters, and other common plumbing appliances.* Perform on the job task organization including personal responsibilities, task organization, safety, and quality control.* Perform minor and major repairs and replacement of traps and interceptors.* Perform minor repairs to chilled water system components.* Perform minor repairs and maintenance to commercial kitchen equipment including disposals, dishwashers, sinks, faucets, basins, and grease traps.* Maintain and repair corrosive resistant waste systems including piping and all associated components.* Maintain and repair various gas systems, flammable and non-flammable.* Knowledge and maintenance of waste disposal systems and components.Minimum Qualifications* HS diploma or GED.* Must demonstrate minimum professional proficiency in the English Language; as defined by the U.S. Department of State.* Three (3) years internal experience as a Plumber Level 1; or external equivalent of five (5) years of experience as a plumber.* Must be a quick learner and exhibit self-motivational skills.* Adequate ability to discern colors for monitoring alarm conditions.* Strong team mentality (ability to work with others).* Well-refined interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, customers, clients, students, vendors, and management.* How to read and interpret SDS information.* Understanding of general vivarium, and laboratory rules and restrictions.* How to identify a fire rated barrier and properly install fire-stopping materials.* Must be able to work all shifts as assigned.* Intermediate troubleshooting of equipment and systems.* Perform intermediate math calculations including simple, rolling and parallel offsets with the use of a pipefitters' handbook.* Knowledge of NFPA 54 and 55, with applicable certifications.* Knowledge of building plumbing maintenance and repair practices.* Must have experience soldering, brazing, and fusion welding.* How to properly utilize lock out-tag out procedures for all energy sources (electrical, thermal, hydraulic, hydronic).* How to properly and safely operate all hand tools, power tools, equipment utilized by facilities maintenance and repair.* Understanding of Reverse Osmosis (RO), De-Ionized (DI), and Acid Waste Systems and the maintenance and repair associated with these systems.* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Fire Guard (F-60).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Using Powder Activated Tools (E-21).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Torch Operations (G-60).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness To Operate and Maintain Air Compressors (A-35).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for City Wide Sprinkler Systems (S-12).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for City Wide Standpipe Systems (S-13).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Standpipe for Multi-Zone Systems (S-14).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Bulk Oil Plants (P-12).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Supervise Fuel-Oil Piping and Storage in Buildings (P-98).* Hold and maintain Certificate of Fitness for Handling, Use, and Storage of Flammable Compressed Gases (G-98).* Responsible for obtaining and maintaining other applicable NYC Certificates of Fitness as required by the FDNY and/or other authorities having jurisdiction.* Hold and maintain PBS (Petroleum Bulk Storage) Class B Operator.* Must be capable of performing fire brigade duties as assigned.* Hold and maintain OSHA 10 Certification.Knowledge of and/or Training on the following:*
