JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is for an entry-level Police Cadet position. Under supervision of the Central Area Patrol Officer (CAP Officer), patrol down town areas on foot or on bicycle, enforce Municipal Ordinances, staff the downtown Contact Station, and respond to requests for information and/or assistance from the public.

Register complaints and refer to appropriate personnel. Enforce rules, regulations and ordinances by giving verbal or written warnings and issuing citations as appropriate for violations of the Ashland Municipal Code and the Oregon Revised Statutes.

Alert the City Police Department to the presence of hazardous situations and criminal activity.

Assist in preliminary first aid for sick or injured persons and summon help for more seriously injured persons.

Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.

Maintain proficiency by attending Police training and meetings.

Testify in court as necessary.

Applicant must be able to perform the duties of this position in all weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS: High school graduation or equivalent. Excellent verbal and written skills, including accuracy in grammar, spelling and composition. Must possess excellent decision making capabilities in stressful environments. Ability to deal courteously and firmly with the public, depending upon the situation.

This is a law enforcement position requiring adherence to state and local laws and vehicle statutes both in on and off-duty status and to the standards of behavior required by the Ashland Police Department.

Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge of city bicycle rules and regulations and city park ordinances. Bilingual skills and CPR/First Aid card highly desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as well as an in-depth background investigation. Valid Oregon driver's license and clear driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Vision must be correctable to 20/20. Must be in good physical condition and able to maintain the physical requirements of the position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, run, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. This position requires mobility. Employee must be able to walk for up to eight hours per day, work alone or with others as a team, climb hills on unimproved terrain, ride a bicycle and operate a vehicle. The employee must be able to lift and place traffic barricades used to close the streets for special events. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis such as bicycles, first aid kit, traffic barricades, etc. Manual dexterity and coordination are required less than 50% of the work period.

May be exposed to all types of weather conditions and may include contact with individuals who may be violent, combative, under the influence of drugs/alcohol or who have communicable diseases. Employee must be willing to work varying shifts and hours, with varying days off.

* TESTING may be conducted for finalists. Applicants who meet the minimum job requirements will be required to take a written exam. Following the exam, a limited number of the most highly qualified applicants will be invited to proceed further in the selection process, which includes an oral board interview. An intensive background investigation, as well as physical and psychological exams, will be conducted on those applicants selected for possible employment. Candidates will be notified of their status throughout the process.
