JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Attends and successfully completes Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.); obtains a probationary law enforcement certificate.
- Participate in educational training and successfully pass weekly test; No deficiencies.
- Participates in physical training and show a steady physical improvement. Successfully pass the Police Officers Physical Ability Test (POPAT).
- Gains knowledge in the investigation of crimes and accidents.
- Gains knowledge in preparing incident, accident, and arrest reports.
- Gains knowledge in processing crime scenes.
- Gains knowledge on preparation of accurate incident, accident and arrest reports.
- Gains knowledge in developing skills needed to prepare cases and testify in District and Superior Courts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development test indicating high school equivalency. Diplomas earned through correspondence enrollment are not recognized.
- Applicants must be able to read on a Tenth-grade reading level.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- No experience requirements.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
- Must be at least Twenty years old by the time of taking the state exam.
- No felony convictions. No serious misdemeanor convictions in the last 5 years.
- No Domestic Violence convictions.
- No DUI, DWI convictions in the last 5 years
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
- Basic knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Basic knowledge of law enforcement vehicles, equipment, tools, and technology.
- Basic knowledge of criminal investigation tools and techniques.
- Basic knowledge of department policies and procedures.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.GUIDELINES: Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws; City ordinances; City administrative and personnel policies; Police Department General Orders; department policy memoranda; Police Department Rules of Conduct and Duty; and North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related law enforcement duties. Potentially life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to complete law enforcement training by assisting in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
