Performs community policing and public service elements of policing such as making positive contact with people in neighborhoods, schools, and the business district. Executes arrest warrants, search warrants, and court subpoenas. Conducts investigations into misdemeanor and felony crimes. Works independently and makes critical decisions with minimal supervision. Operates alcohol/breath screening devices. Faces combative, disruptive persons and determines the appropriate level of responsive force. Uses force and takes persons into custody without violating their civil and constitutional rights. Mediates disputes and arrests violent and non-violent persons. Reports to the Corporal/Sergeant Patrol.
- Patrols designated areas or sectors of the city looking for suspicious persons or activity.
- Responds to all complaints, robberies, burglaries, domestic disturbances, fights, accidents, etc. and completes all related paperwork in a neat and timely fashion.
- Conducts investigations of complaints and incidents including, but not limited to, interviewing victims, complainants, witnesses, and alleged perpetrators; and collects evidence and prepares all related paperwork.
- Responds to all emergency situations such as medical and fire calls to provide assistance and support to emergency personnel.
- Enforces all City and State laws.
- Executes arrest warrants, search warrants, and subpoenas.
- Maintains excellent community and police relationships by making positive contact with people in neighborhoods, schools, and the business district.
- Secures and safeguards all major crime scenes such as murder, rape, shootings, etc., and processes crime scenes not responded to by investigators.
- Secures perimeter; cordons and initiates pursuits during manhunts or crimes in progress involving fleeing suspects.
- Ensures that police equipment is functioning properly.
- Reports any and all faulty or malfunctioning equipment.
- Attends training sessions and other continuing education courses as required by department or state.
- Conducts special patrol techniques and assignments to target drug dealers, users, and other high profile criminal activities such as burglaries, rape, and robberies, etc., and may include other community relations assignments within neighborhoods and the business community.
- Operates and administers Draeger Alcohol Test to motorists as required by circumstances.
- Investigates traffic accidents by interviewing witnesses, victims, and other persons involved.
- Testifies in Circuit Court, Civil Court and Probate Court and prepares all documentation as required by case or City/District Attorney; assists with case preparation as needed.
- Receives and reviews a variety of information to include criminal histories, personal information (SSN, DOB, address), SOPs and City PSP, e-mail, criminal histories, training, calls from dispatch, suspect descriptions, vehicle info, shift briefings, BOLO's from other agencies, statements, descriptions, verbal statements, legal updates, classroom training, crime scene evidence, subpoenas, observation, requests from other agencies, missing persons broadcast, calls for service, and warrants.
- Prepares and/or generates a variety of information to include criminal histories, personal information, pass-on requests, field training DER's, e-mails, arrest reports, incident/offense reports, grand jury packet, juvenile packet, accident report, citations, deposition worksheet, wrecker report, UTTC, and close patrols.
- Refers to State laws, PSP, SOP, e-mails, personal information, criminal histories, city ordinance, criminal code, offense committed, victim/suspect info, State Traffic Code, State Criminal Code, previously filed reports, Alabama Penal Code, City maps, response plan book, and the traffic accident handbook.
- Utilizes a variety of computer software such as Police Pak, E-Cite, Omni Forms, MS Word, MS Office, Internet Explorer, Move, ALACOP, GMAIL, Google Docs, Easy Draw, NCIC, LETS, Search bug and Street Draw.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:High School Diploma or its equivalent one (1) year of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.Special Qualifications:Must have required training and/or certifications including: APOST Certification, Field Training Officer Certification, Basic CPR/First AID, Drager Certification, Radar Certification, and SSGT Certification.Valid Driver's License.The City's group insurance is currently through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. The employees' health, vision, hearing and dental premiums are paid in full by the City. The City pays 50% of family coverage. The employee cost for family health, vision and hearing is $67.47 per semi-monthly deduction cycle and dental is $10.00 per semi-monthly deduction cycle.
