Job Summary
The position of Police Officer is a regular, and/or special detail position, providing general law enforcement and service related duties for the Georgia College & State University community. To perform these duties, employees in this position must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, certification as a peace officer, pursuant to the rules of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.
Work involves knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, in addition to policies and procedures of the Board of Regents of the State of Georgia, Georgia College & State University, and the department of Public Safety. Employees assigned to this position must be able to demonstrate the ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making within the limits prescribed by laws, rules, regulation, policies, and procedures.
Work requires dedication to public service, which is often accompanied by emotional and/or physical stress from rapidly evolving events.
Responsibilities
Patrol - 40
Conduct routine vehicle, foot, bicycle, and alternative patrol of Georgia College & State University properties, and the surrounding area pursuant to statutory jurisdictions.
Such patrol shall facilitate the detection and deterrence of crime, criminal activity, and suspicious activity for Georgia College & State University properties.
Law Enforcement - 15
This position requires employees to utilize sound discretion and decision making skills when determining appropriate responses to violations of federal, state, local, and traffic laws.
Reporting - 15
Provide adequate documentation of public safety actions, including the authoring of incident reports, arrest and booking reports, use of force reports, supplemental reports, traffic citations, and other documents related to safety and security initiatives on campus.
Such documentation may include written reports, diagrams, sketches, and other representations of reported circumstances.
Safety and Security Activities - 15
Perform relevant safety and security functions that enhance public safety within the Georgia College & State University community.
Such functions include: developing positive police-community relations, facilitating the physical security of campus properties, the performance of first-aid in response to medical distress, the enhancement of emergency response to a variety of natural and man-made hazards.
Communications - 10
Effectively communicate with other departmental personnel in the field, and as a reserve communications officer in the Georgia College & State University communications center.
Other - 5
Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Must possess a high school diploma or accredited GED equivalent
Other Required Qualifications
Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background check, pursuant to the regulations of Georgia College & State University, the Board of Regents Police Guidebook and recommendations from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. Requirements will include, at a minimum: an oral interview, a state and federal criminal history check, a nationwide sex offender search, a social security number check, a credit history check, a medical examination, a drug screening, a psychological screening, a polygraph examination, an employment history check, and the verification of at least three professional/personal references.
Must possess a valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.

* The ability to perform arrests, forcibly, if necessary and reasonable, requiring proficiency in the use of handcuffs, other physical restraints, defensive tactics, less lethal and intermediate weapons, and firearms
* The ability to handle situations firmly, courteously and tactfully, with respect for the rights of others
* The ability to physically check buildings, and lock or unlock facilities as needed to support the operations of the university
* The ability to develop and maintain positive police-community relations
* The ability to speak about crime prevention, awareness, and education to a variety of campus audiences
* The ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions
* The ability to perform rescue and evacuation functions during accidents, emergencies, and disasters, to include traffic control and direction, removing persons from dangerous situations, and facilitating the evacuation of campus facilities
* The ability to use radio systems to dispatch and receive calls for service
