A Police Officer is responsible for the efficient performance of required duties conforming to the rules, regulations, and general orders contained herein. Duties shall consist of, but are not limited to, general police responsibilities necessary to the safety and good order of the community. A police officer shall:

* Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.

* Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventative patrol and other measures.

* Aid people who are in danger of physical harm.

* Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

* Identify potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems.

* Promote and preserve the peace.

* Provide emergency services.

* The police officer position is non-supervisory. Police officer duties are performed on an assigned shift under the general guidance of the Police Chief and designees.

Essential Functions:

* Enforce institutional rules, regulations, and laws regarding student conduct as defined in the Student Handbook.

* Enforce regulations concerning parking, blocking or impeding traffic.

* Issue traffic tickets, summons and arrest warrants.

* Enforce institutional rules relative to vehicle identification parking permits.

* Enforce criminal and traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia within jurisdiction of authority.

* Maintain a professional law enforcement image at all times. Provide consistent law enforcement, dealing with each occurrence in the same professional manner.

* Pursue additional police training.

* File patrol reports after each shift.

* To be knowledgeable of all security systems for the Ferrum College campus including: security cameras, and alarm systems, as well as operational procedures of each.

* Function as a team member of Student Affairs Office in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the Students Affairs Office and the College.

* Assume special responsibilities on assignment by Chief of Police and his/her designee, the VP of Operations or the President.

* Engage the campus community in crime and safety prevention.

* Conduct full investigations on cases.

* Foot patrols in and around academic buildings, checking for security and safety issues.

* Foot patrols in and around occupied as well as unoccupied dorm buildings, checking for security and safety issues.

Supervision Given:

* Oversee work study students and provide assistance as requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Certified in the State of Virginia as Police Officer; knowledge in community policing techniques; general knowledge of the rules of evidence and laws of search and seizure; ability to deal effectively with young adults; ability to analyze evidence; ability to properly question and interview individuals; ability to organize and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports; skilled in the use of firearms and police equipment; possession of physical ability and endurance; ability to establish effective working relationships with students, parents, school officials, fellow workers and the public. Subject to criminal history and credit report.

* High school degree or equivalent, responsible work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Certified community police specialist; DCJS certified basic instructor.

Other:

* Attention to detail. Excellent verbal and communication skills. Ability to work alone and unsupervised.
