Job Description:
THE POSITION: The Northwest Arkansas Childrens Shelter School Resource Officer is primarily responsible for the safety of residents and employees of NWACS and their properties, and to prevent crime, maintain law and order, and improve citizens quality of life. The goal is to achieve community safetyand crime reduction. Responsible for ensuring that the Shelter environment, activities, and tasks support the Shelters vision and mission and are carried out in accordance with policies and procedures, current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. This position requires a self-motivated and progressive approach to law enforcement and the ability to interact and collaborate with residents, staff, as well as Local, State, and Federal Law enforcement agencies will be required. Key Responsibilities: Deter crimes and assure the community through high-visibility policingActs as a liaison between community partners and government agencies to assist and advocate for children in the agencys care, especially in situations of suspected trafficking.Patrol assigned areas and monitor activities to protect people/propertyInvestigate crimes and apprehend suspected law violatorsObserve and respond to various situations or emergenciesFollow rules, guidelines, and protocolsDesign, implement, and maintain safety protocolsConduct initial investigationsGather evidence and ensure successful prosecutionsProduce internal reports and provide feedback on case statusDeal with case paperwork and administrative proceduresFoster good public relationships and liaise with community groups or individualsCoordinate operations with other emergency servicesAttend and provide evidence in courtCoordinate and direct staff and volunteers in the completion of tasks and provision of services according to Shelter and resident needsMaintain positive communication between shifts, wings, and team leaders in order to ensure consistency for all staff and residentsPerform other duties assigned by the Chief of Police or His designee Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Basic proficiency in use of computers and softwareEffective, professional oral and written communication skillsEffective problem-solving and decision-making skillsFlexibility, reliability, and self-motivationProven working experience in law enforcementMeet and maintain the physical requirements set forth by the Highfill Police Department and the State of ArkansasProficiency in using police equipmentExcellent knowledge of standard operating procedures, judicial procedures, civil and constitutional lawsWorking knowledge of interrogation techniques and scene managementKnowledge and skills of law enforcement principles and practicesExcellent interpersonal and communication skillsAbility to build effective working relationshipsSound judgment along with effective decision-making skillsConflict resolution and problem-solving skillsResponsibility, dependability, honesty, and integrityWilling to submit to extensive medical and criminal background checksValid drivers license Health, Safety, and Supervision: Coordinate with direct care staff to ensure scheduled and planned activities are carried out; revise the schedule, as needed, to meet the needs of the residents and Shelter.Practices and models appropriate safety precautions and rules; ensures compliance with safety protocols.In coordination with the Vice President of Operations, conduct and document emergency plans and drills.Identify potential risks in the Shelter environment and intervene appropriately to avoid possible crises.Adheres to all Shelter policies and procedures.Verbally and non-verbally de-escalates crisis situations in a manner that protects dignity and integrity. Therapeutic Milieu: Promotes an inclusive, respectful environment that embraces diversity.Interacts with residents in a positive, warm, nurturing manner.Integrates residents' need for dignity, nurturance, choice, self-management, and privacy into daily activities. Professionalism: Maintains confidentiality and privacy regarding all residents' information in accordance with Shelter policy and all applicable federal and state laws/regulations.Carries out work tasks in a way that conforms to and supports the mission, vision, and values of the Shelter as well as professional and ethical standards.Establish effective professional relationships with direct care staff, peers, support staff, volunteers, leadership, and other professionals.Attends and participates in mandatory training, staff meetings, and all other events.Sets, maintains, and communicates appropriate personal and professional boundaries.Answer doors and incoming telephone calls in a professional manner that protects the confidentiality and privacy of residents and staff per Shelter protocol.Completes all required documentation in a timely manner per agency procedures. Schedule, Education, Training and Experience: Expected hours: 40 60 per weekSchedule: Day shiftHolidaysNight shiftOn callOvertimeWeekends as needed Education: Minimum Basic Certificate from Arkansas Division of Law Enforcement Standards and Training or obtain reciprocity from another state within 6 months.High school Diploma: college degree in police science, Criminal Justice or related field is desirable Experience: Minimum 3 years Law Enforcement (Required)Military: 1 year (Preferred)Leadership: 1 year (Preferred)Proven ability to effectively lead, manage, train, and motivate others; prefer some experience in a supervisory role. Work Location: City Of Highfill Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas Childrens Shelter, offsite events as needed.
