DESCRIPTION
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety of citizens and property by preventing, reporting, investigating, and analyzing crime within the City's limits.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Essential Functions:
* Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
* Participates in a classroom style orientation program, attends training sessions.
* Successfully completes Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) Ride-Along Program.
* Carries and, as necessary, uses firearms and other defensive weapons in accordance with official training.
* Responds to call for service, patrols assigned zone and interacts with citizens.
* Prevents, detects, and investigates criminal activity.
* Understands to enforce federal and state laws and local ordinances while exercising good and reasonable judgment.
* Issues citations and search and arrest warrants and conducts searches of persons and property in accordance with applicable federal and state laws.
* Assists Fire & Rescue Department in emergency and non-emergency situations.
* Composes reports, organizes paperwork, and submits to superiors for review.
* Prepares court cases, communicates with district attorney's office, and appears in court to testify.
* Inspects and maintains assigned equipment.
* Preserves the peace by using lawful authority to manage and defuse conflict situations.
* Provides security at community events, information, and assistance to members of the public.
* Ability to work various shifts, flexible hours and holidays as needed. Some overtime may be required.
* Understands and validly enforces federal and state laws and local ordinances while exercising good judgment and reasonable discretion.
* Possess the temperament and good judgment to effectively and diplomatically deal with all members of the public.
* Performs other work as assigned.
Physical Demands:
* Possess the physical ability to run and the strength to apprehend law violators.
* Frequently required to sit and talk, hear, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
* Occasionally required tolift objects and persons, climbs stairs, walks, and run intermittently.
* Will operate law enforcement equipment including police vehicles with all emergency equipment, mobile radios, hand-held radios, recorders, fingerprint equipment, cameras, video camera, copy machine, facsimile machine, personal computer and peripheral equipment, radar equipment, and both lethal and non-lethal weapons such as pistols, rifles, shotguns, ASP batons and OC spray.
* Must meet visual requirements of 20/30 each eye corrected and have sufficient visual acuity to act to protect self and others in emergency situations uncorrected.
* Must have hearing sufficient to perform essential hearing tasks without posing a direct threat to themselves or others. Applicants may use a hearing aid in one or both ears to meet the above hearing requirement. If a hearing aid is used, the device must be of the type that screens out loud sounds, i.e., gun shots, to prevent further hearing loss.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
* Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
* Must be at least 20 years old.
* Must be a citizen of the United States of America or a permanent legal resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces. As required by T.C.A. 38-8-105(d), an officer who is permanent legal resident as of the officer's employment start date must apply for or obtain U.S. citizenship within six years of the officer's employment start date; failure to obtain U.S. citizenship within six years of the officer's employment start date shall constitute grounds for termination of the officer's employment.
* Must pass a pre-employment Police Officer Selection Test.
* RequiresP.O.S.T. certification within six (6) months of hire date and completes department field training program within one (1) year.
* Must meet all lawful qualifications established by Tennessee law to be certified by the Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission ( P.O.S.T. ), T.C.A. Section 38-8-106 and regulations as same may be amended.

* Requires submitting to and pass a physical examination by a licensed physician selected by the City of Murfreesboro upon offer of employment.
* Must not have been released or discharged under any other than honorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
* Must possess a good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation conducted by the Murfreesboro Police Department.
* Must be certified by a Tennessee Licensed Health Care Provider qualified in the psychiatric or psychological fields as being free from any disorder, as set forth in the current edition of the DSM that would, in the professional judgment of the examiner, impair the subject's ability to perform any essential function of the job.
* Possess the ability to lawfully and safely use firearms and qualify with a minimum score of 75. Failure to meet this requirement shall result in termination.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
* Requires Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission P.O.S.T. certification within six (6) months.
* Must have a valid driver's license.
Hiring Process for Police Officers:Our hiring process beings with a physical ability test (PT). Those that pass the PT move on to a written test. Those that pass the written test move forward to interviews. After interviews, those selected will move forward to the background screening. After the background, the applicant will move forward to psychological testing and medical/drug and alcohol screenings. Once all of those are successfully passed, the applicant will be hired.
