Under general supervision, attend a rigorous four-month, high stress, physically demanding basic police academy designed to qualify cadets as a police officer. During the academy, cadets must maintain at least minimum levels of proficiency at all levels of training. Cadets must fulfill all requirements necessary for appointment to the position of police officer.ACADEMY EXPENSESDuring the academy, the City of Shafter will cover the following:
  • Academy expenses
  • $25.50 hourly compensation (subject to overtime compensation at a rate of time and one-half for hours worked in excess of 40 hours during the 7-day work week, Saturday through Friday)
  • 100% City Paid health benefits on the base plans for the cadet and eligible dependents
Upon completion of the academy, an appointment as a Police Officer starts at $3,024 biweekly and includes a 100% City-paid benefit package, annual uniform/equipment allowance, plus incentives for education, bilingual, and tuition reimbursement. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Attend, participate, and successfully complete the Basic Peace Officer's Academy, maintaining at least minimum levels of proficiency at all levels of training.
  • Receive and practice instructions covering the identification and utilization of techniques and principles that encourage community service, crime prevention, and appropriate behavior.
  • Provide staff support for police activities by performing various administrative and patrol duties.
  • Fulfill all necessary requirements for appointment to the position of Police Officer.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Age: Must be 21 years or older at the completion of the academy.
  • Reading and Writing Ability: Read and write at the levels determined by job-related tests.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
  • Language: Read and write English. Fluency in Spanish highly desirable.
  • Driver's License: Valid CA driver's license and good driving record.
  • Criminal Conviction: No conviction of a felony offense, misdemeanor domestic violence offense or of any offense which resulted from a domestic violence incident. Requires fingerprinting.
  • Moral Character: Must be of good moral character as determined by a thorough peace officer background investigation.
  • Physical and Psychological Fitness: Must be free from any physical, mental or emotional condition which might adversely affect performance as a peace officer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge in basic law enforcement terminology and concepts; techniques for dealing with people of all socio-economic levels under hostile and emergency situations; safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work.
  • Good communication skills to effectively convey ideas, both written and oral.
  • Skill to evaluate or make independent decisions, based on experience or knowledge, without supervision and within the guidelines of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Strong time management skills in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to identify problems and opportunities, review possible alternative courses of actions before selecting one, utilizing information resources available when making decisions.
  • Ability to develop feasible solutions to problems, recommend actions, designed to prevent problems from occurring, and refer problems to upper management when necessary.

  • *The order of the selection process is subject to change.*WRITTEN EXAMINATION PROCESSPOST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) exams are proctored by the City of Shafter. Candidates passing the physical ability test will be invited to take the PELLETB written examination. In accordance with POST, the PELLETB examination can only be taken once in a 30 day time period. Preparation Guide for the PELLETB exam can be found at: Must receive a minimum T-Score of 42 or higher. The minimum accepted score to move on to the next phase of the selection process has not been determined at this time. Applicants will not be required to attend the written examination if a PELLETB score of 42 or higher is submitted at the time of your application submittal and is dated within one year from the application deadline date. Applicants who wish to retake the PELLETB exam can do so if their score is lower than 48 and have not tested within 30 days from the date of the PELLETB examination.BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONThis position is exempt from California Assembly Bill No. 1008 Employment Discrimination: Conviction History, pursuant to California Government Code Section 12952(d)(2).
