Location : Bemidji, MNJob Type: VolunteerJob Number: 2024-00215Department: PoliceDivision: Police - PatrolOpening Date: 07/09/2024Closing Date: ContinuousFLSA: Non-ExemptBargaining Unit: N/AGENERAL PURPOSE The Bemidji Police Reserve Program's philosophy is to provide training and experience to adults interested in a law enforcement career and to allow citizens to assist the Bemidji Police Department with its day-to-day operations in a volunteer capacity. A volunteer with the Bemidji Police Department who performs a variety of duties including parking enforcement, animal control, traffic control, crime scene and event security, property recovery, business and security checks, house and senior checks, foot patrols, park and public housing patrols, response to disasters, police support service duties of a non-hazardous nature, and other related work as required.

- Receives work direction from the Community Service Officer or Volunteer in Police Services Coordinator under general supervision of the Police Chief.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES The duties listed above are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Parking Enforcement
- Work involves enforcement of parking regulations and issuing parking violations. When mandated, must appear in court to reference tickets and be able to explain identification, nature of work in regard to tickets, and routine followed.
- Animal Control
- Responsible for responding to animal complaints as assigned. Maintain accurate records on animals picked up.
- Crime Prevention
- Be knowledgeable in Crime Prevention information and department procedure. Assist the Community Service Officer with gathering of information, disseminating information, and provide assistance under the direction of the Community Service Officer when requested.
- Vacation Home Checks
- Assist police officers and Citizen's Patrol maintaining and updating the vacation log and performing inspections of homes as requested.
- Police Support Services
- Provide services including, but not limited to picking up and delivering mail; providing assistance and information to the public; providing traffic control and direction; picking up and delivering supplies and Department of Public Safety vehicles for maintenance and radio repair; assisting Police Officers with vehicle tows, crime scene security, response to disasters and security at major events.
- Represents the City of Bemidji Police Department in a professional manner while executing assigned tasks.
- Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education & Experience
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Coursework/education in law enforcement or criminal justice preferred, but not required.
- Previous experience relevant to the position involving public contact
- Completion of law enforcement skills program preferred, but not required.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Ability to communicate and deal with the public in a courteous, professional manner.
- Must be in excellent physical condition. Physical examination may be required.
- Ability to learn and apply all relevant city ordinances and state statutes.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports in the English language, as needed.
- Ability to work without close supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Special Requirements- Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid MN Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to read and understand the English language.
- Must know or be able to learn basic computer data entry and retrieval skills.
- Must possess and maintain First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Must pass a thorough background check, which must be clear of felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
- Course work in Criminal Justice program at an accredited college or university preferred.
