Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
A sleep (polysomnographic) technologist provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in-center and home sleep apnea testing (HSAT), diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and comprehensive patient care. Provides sleep related education and support to patients and families. A sleep technologist is able to perform the duties defined for a sleep technician and is able to provide general oversight of other sleep center staff. The sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep technology (RPSGT or RST).
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
* Associate's Degree in Sleep Technology or
* Certificate in Sleep Technology or Experience in Lieu of Education
* Documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician

* Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) Illinois upon hire or
* Registered Sleep Technologist (ABSM) Illinois upon hire and
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
* One (1) year Sleep Lab
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
* Must have strong interpersonal and customer-service skills.
* Possess appropriate computer skills for the position (advanced computer operation/troubleshooting; Word and Excel).
* Good verbal and written communication skills; ability to perform basic math/computations.
* Demonstrate critical thinking skills and ability to follow direction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Documents patient arrival, interactions, and consent for testing.
* Reviews and verifies departmental orders for testing and insurance/prior authorization verification.
* Reviews patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity.
* Acquires and documents additional information from the patient or ordering provider
* Ensures appropriateness of testing and parameters.
* Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting, desensitization, and education.
* Prepares patient for testing according to policy, selecting appropriate equipment per order.
* Per policy, documents routine observations during testing.
* Correlates physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of data.
* Performs equipment and physiologic calibrations to ensure quality data; monitors data quality to ensure recording is artifact-free.
* Performs equipment cleaning and disinfection; assures infection and quality control according to policy.
* Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age specific care for all populations seen in the Sleep Lab.
* Implements appropriate interventions including patient safety and sleep related therapeutic interventions.
* Follows Lights On procedures to verify integrity of data, and completeness of test documentation and patient forms.
* Develops and maintains effective working relationships
* Communicates professionally and respectfully with all internal and external customers.
* Assists in requesting and maintaining testing supplies; participates in routine department tasks and orderliness of work area.
* Demonstrates proficiency in distinguishing sleep states and identifying clinical events, according to professional guidelines.
* Scores sleep/wake stages and clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.)
* Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data and the ability to analyze complex situations/policy.
* Supports and participates in quality and performance improvement (PI) initiatives.
* Performs and demonstrates proficiency in performing ancillary testing (oximetry, actigraphy, home sleep apnea testing).
* Follows procedural protocols for Multiple Sleep Latency (MSLT) and Maintenance of Wakefulness Testing (MWT).
* Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age specific care for all populations seen in the Sleep Lab.
* Per policy, documents routine observations during testing.
* Correlates physiologic data and behavioral observations to facilitate scoring and interpretation of data.
* Reviews patient history and supporting documentation for medical necessity.
* Acquires and documents additional information from the patient or ordering provider
* Ensures appropriateness of testing and parameters.

* Directly participates in training and oversight of Polysomnographic Trainees and Technicians.
