DescriptionCal Poly Pomona Enterprises Employment ServicesANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCYSUMMARY: Cal Poly Pomona Foundation is currently searching for one full-time program advisor to work on the East Los Angeles Subregional K-16 Collaborative under the supervision of Project Director, Dr. Terri Gomez, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. This is an hourly, full-time grant funded, 12-month, benefitted position. Continuous employment will be contingent on grant funding. Grant award September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2026.Aligned with the larger Los Angeles (L.A.) K16 Regional convening, the East L.A. Subregional K-16 Collaborative aims to expand and enhance dual enrollment, broaden and expand early STEM outreach among female and minoritized students, facilitate transfer pipelines, and expand work-based learning opportunities. The Advising Specialist reports to the Assistant Vice President for Academic Engagement and Success and plays a significant role in the administration, coordination, and implementation of grant-funded programs and transfer services at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP). Focusing primarily on early transfer engagement and outreach, this position will work closely with local community colleges to connect prospective transfer students with the resources and support needed to navigate the transfer process. Through the PolyTransfer program, the Advising Specialist will design, implement, and manage initiatives that encourage students to explore transfer opportunities early, address knowledge gaps around different transfer pathways, admissions requirements, application processes, and financial aid options. The Advising Specialist will collaborate with the PolyTransfer team to plan, execute, and assess transfer-oriented programming that builds an inclusive community and prepares students for a successful transition to CPP. Signature programs include workshops, community-building activities, and a 3-day Transfer Academy that introduces community college students to university life and provides guidance for a smooth, intentional transition to a 4-year institution. Additionally, the Advising Specialist will collaborate with the PolyTransfer team with the recruitment, hiring, and training of student leaders and peer mentors, offering continuous leadership development to ensure they are prepared to engage and support incoming transfer students effectively. With a primary focus on outreach to underserved populations from CPP's service community colleges (Mt. SAC, Chaffey, Citrus, and Rio Hondo), the Advising Specialist will develop and deliver retention-focused and culturally empowering programs that promote college access and success. Engaging parents and families in the transfer journey, they will also work to build a supportive network that enhances students' academic and social integration. The ideal candidate will have experience in project management, advising or coaching, and a demonstrated commitment to advancing college access, empowering families, and achieving equity-focused student success outcomes. SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
  • Collaborate with K-16 internal and external partners to achieve grant goals, collect and compile data on activities, and produce quarterly reports.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and assess community college programs that support grant initiatives, focusing on STEM engagement, outreach summer programs, and pipeline activities.
  • Maintain the program calendar, activity records, and participant data.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with K-12, CCC, and CPP partners.
  • Lead and coordinate PolyTransfer Advantage Program and PolyTransfer Academy activities, developing partnership with community colleges and collaborating with Cal Poly Pomona stakeholders.
  • Work with campus partners to enhance programs and services that support student success, retention, and graduation.
  • Work with campus partners and CCC to coordinate campus visits. Develop agendas relevant to the special populations.
  • Create training materials and presentations to educate K-16 partners, educators, students, and families on Associate Degree for Transfer, Transfer Success Pathway, STEM Pathways, CSU admission guidelines, financial aid and campus programs/resources.
  • Organize virtual and in-person outreach and educational presentations for high schools and community colleges.
  • Engage CCC students through culturally empowering programming and referrals, with a focus on supporting underserved populations affected by the pandemic.
  • Collaborate with the PolyTransfer team on developing and implementing the PolyTransfer Summer Transition Program and other transfer initiatives.
  • Recruit, train, evaluate, and lead student leaders and mentors.
  • Provide coaching and advising to prospective and current transfer students.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of CPP resources, admissions, financial aid and articulation, along with general knowledge of CCC resources to offer effective student support.
  • Support the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Assistant Vice President for Academic Engagement and Success with ODD and grant-related activities.
  • Assist with assessment activities, including survey dissemination, data collection, and reporting.
  • Participate actively in OSS team meetings and contribute to discussions.
  • Plan and coordinate meetings with CCC and CPP partners.
  • Conduct bilingual (English and Spanish) outreach activities, workshops, and presentations on and off campus, which may require commuting to a community college campus.
  • Serve on committees and project teams; record, transcribe, and distribute minutes, and follow up on action items as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Must possess excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • This position requires a combination of strong administrative, research and interpersonal skills.
  • The following elements of skills and experience are desired: strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships at all levels and with constituencies internal and external to the university.
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of initiative and be able to work independently to establish and accomplish priorities and to deal with multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the campus procedures and activities and the overall organization is required.
  • Ability to effectively use business software such as Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet) and instructional design with Canvas.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administrations, business administration or a job-related field
  • 2+ Years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field
  • Master's degree in job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
  • Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid driver's license and auto insurance.
