General Statement of Job

Under limited supervision, position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the swimming pool. This includes managing the staff schedule, training new and returning staff, supervising lifeguards, pool admissions staff, and swim lesson instructors. Enforcing facility safety rules and policies, inspecting equipment and facility for potential damage and safety issues, and requesting repairs and maintenance when necessary. Complete pool operator duties hourly. Complete daily records and reports. In addition, may be scheduled as a swim lesson instructor on a substitute basis. Responsibilities include all matters pertaining to business management, pool safety, directing, scheduling, supervising the pool staff, and sanitation. Reports to the Special Events & Leisure Programmer or Designee.

Must be available to work during the summer season, mid-May through Labor Day weekend. Working approximately 35 hours per week as the posted schedule permits.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

* Supervises all pool employees.

* Supports the mission, vision, and goals of the Spotsylvania County Parks & Recreation Department.

* Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the Parks & Recreation Pool Operating Procedures Manual.

* Immediately reports all accidents or disciplinary problems to the Special Events & Leisure Programmer or designee.

* Inspects safety equipment. Ensure that safety equipment is in the proper place and ready for use.Reports damaged equipment and, if possible, remove it.

* Maintains discipline at the aquatics facility as listed in the Pool Operating Procedures Manual.

* Ensures opening, hourly, and closing duties are completed as outlined in the Pool Operations Procedures Manual.

* Maintains staffing schedule, and ensures adequate staff are scheduled before opening.

* Ensures swim instructor/ lifeguard to participant ratios are met at all times.

* Provides support to Pool Admissions staff on duty.

* Provides outstanding customer service to all customers and participants. Be available to customers.

* Ensures that the aquatic environment is free of obstructions and safe for participant use.

* Ensures the safety of pool staff and participants at all times.

* Enforces pool policies, regulations, laws, and ordinances governing the conduct of persons using the aquatics facility in accordance with the Pool Operating Procedures Manual. Confirms Pool Admissions staff has closed out properly at the end of each shift. Verifies deposit & cash setup, and signs off as supervisor. Secures all monies properly.

* Completes administrative tasks in a timely manner. Meets timesheet and scheduling deadlines.

* Ensures a lifeguard is in the stand at all times when patrons/staff are in the facility.

* Makes sure the facility is secured (doors, gates, alarm) at the end of the day.

* Completes and record water readings, attendance, pump pressure, and water flow hourly.Checks pump room upon arrival, hourly, and at the end of each shift.

* Provides appropriate and professional feedback to pool staff on performance. Assists in staff evaluations on job performance and makes recommendations for retraining or termination of employees who lack cooperation or perform unsatisfactory service.

* Makes sure that employees understand their responsibility to see that the patrons have a healthful, enjoyable, safe experience while at the facility.

* Wears proper uniform, County issued, and represents Spotsylvania Parks & Recreation Department in a professional manner at all times.

* Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and operations including Filtration, Chlorination and PH Control, Vacuuming, Backwashing, and Chemical Balancing.

* Schedules pool staff and ensure staff are not working over 38 hours a week in combined positions. Ensures employees do not leave until their assigned work period is over. Maintains staff rotation and staff breaks.

* Ensures the pool is in operation only during the hours set by the department.

* Responsible for maintaining first aid supplies, equipment, and inventory.

* Schedules, facilitates, and participates in in-service training for staff during the season.

* Exhibits a positive example for staff.

* Fulfills the function of a Lifeguard and its duties as needed.

* Fulfills the function of a Swim Lesson Instructor and its duties as needed.

* Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

Graduation from High School or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Must possess valid certification in ARC Lifeguard Training & CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/First Aid/AED).

Must possess a valid certification as an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or nationally recognized pool operator course (CPO) or enroll and complete certification upon hire. Certification must be completed prior to mid-May.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification (WSI) preferred. Experience in teaching swim lessons or coaching swim team preferred. Must complete in-house swim lesson instructor training upon hire.

Must successfully complete mandatory Parks & Recreation Training Program before specific job duties are assigned.

Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and drug screen.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to pass lifeguard water test and meet requirements of ongoing drills. Must be able to remain alert. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods. Must be able to withstand outdoor temperatures. Ability to recognize visual and verbal distress signs/actions from potential drowning victims within 10 seconds. Ability to respond to the victim in water within 10 seconds. Ability to respond to an emergency situation including but not limited to a water emergency, respiratory or cardiac emergency, minor/major first aid, and a missing person. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment, such as pump room equipment, pool vacuum equipment, calculator, or telephone. Tasks require the ability to exert medium to heavy physical effort which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with job-related equipment. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities. Must have minimal/ levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).
