The Generations AmeriCorps program recruits current, former, and future college students to enrich the academic lives of at-risk early childhood center students. The AmeriCorps Enrichment Member will have a strong focus on center in-reach for academically challenged youth. The Member will partner with a classroom teacher to select students in need of academic enrichment. The member will work one-on-one with children who have scored low on the school readiness assessments for their age. The member, in conjunction with the classroom teacher, will design lesson plans to promote school readiness in terms of literacy skills that include domains in phonological awareness, print awareness, early writing and alphabet knowledge. These activities will promote increase in scores related to language and cognitive skills for pre-literacy. In addition, members will leverage over 120 additional volunteers that will engage in literacy activities in the preschool centers. Member Duties : Members will assist in early childhood classrooms.
