Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) help people with daily tasks, also known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Their duties include:
- Personal care: Assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, eating, and toileting
- Housekeeping: Helping with light housekeeping, changing linens, making beds, and laundering clothes
- Meal preparation: Planning and preparing meals, and feeding
- Transportation: Driving to special events, outings, or meetings, and accompanying on vacations
- Errands: Running errands and grocery shopping
- Companionship: Providing companionship and emotional support
PCAs can also help with:
- Denture care
- Transferring and ambulation
- Taking care of service animals
- Simple repairs
- Administering some medications
- Applying dry dressings to wounds
- Helping with banking affairs
PCAs are often employed in the individual and family services and home health care services industries. They can also work in vocational rehabilitation services and residential facilities.
