Job Overview:

PACU RNs shall work in accordance with the policies of the government healthcare system where assigned, utilizing the nursing process, skills, technology, research, and all available resources to maximize the delivery of safe, efficient, and quality care to pre-operative and post-operative surgical patients. They function as primary nurses accountable for planning and coordinating the delivery of Peri-Anesthesia nursing care to post-surgical patients, assuming responsibility for coordinating care that focuses on patient transition through the continuum of care. This includes patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. PACU RNs consider all characteristics of the individual, including age, life stage, health status, race, culture, values, and previous experiences. They provide a full range of nursing care to patients with various physical and/or behavioral problems, influencing care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Additionally, PACU RNs are poised and articulate in communicating with individuals of diverse educational levels and ethnic backgrounds, work cooperatively as team members in all assignments, and participate in unit or program-level quality improvement processes and customer service initiatives. PACU RNs shall also perform any other job duties as assigned.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years of recent PACU RN work
  • Applies advanced nursing processes, skills, technology, research, and comprehensive resources to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality care for diverse pre-operative and post-operative surgical patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
  • Serves as the primary nurse with extensive experience in planning and coordinating Peri-Anesthesia nursing care for post-surgical patients, including those with complex needs.
  • Manages patient care through the entire continuum, emphasizing smooth transitions from anesthesia to recovery, patient and family education, effective self-management strategies post-discharge, and enhancing factors that contribute to high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Integrates thorough consideration of all patient characteristics—such as age, life stage, health status, race, culture, values, and previous experiences—into individualized care plans.
  • Delivers a full spectrum of nursing care to patients with a wide range of physical and behavioral problems, utilizing specialized techniques and interventions pertinent to the PACU setting.
  • Collaborates effectively with interdisciplinary team members to influence and improve patient care outcomes, leveraging extensive experience and knowledge in post-anesthesia recovery.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, interacting with patients and their families as well as healthcare professionals of varied educational levels and ethnic backgrounds with clarity and sensitivity.
  • Functions as a cooperative team member, contributing to and supporting team efforts across all assignments within the PACU.
  • Engages actively in unit and program-level quality improvement initiatives and customer service programs, applying extensive PACU experience to drive improvements and enhance patient care.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders throughout the work shift.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist.
  • Lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance.
  • Push or pull with up to 30 lbs of force.

Education Requirements:

  • Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse academic program (BSN or ADN).
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in at least one state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

  • Hours range from 7:00AM – 5:00PM and 7:00AM – 9:00PM
