This is a one-year hire (renewable) in support of the development of advanced materials and assemblies for building enclosures and development of innovative approach to assess the building energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) at SyracuseCoE. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with Drs. Jensen Zhang and Bing Dong of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Drs. Bess Krietemeyer and Nina Sharifi of School of Architecture, strengthening an established research program on healthy, energy efficient and smart buildings and cities by developing advanced materials and assemblies for both new and retrofitted buildings and developing real-time monitoring and control optimization methods, presenting research findings at conferences and workshops, publishing research papers, and assisting in the preparation of applications for external funding to government agencies (e.g., NSF, DOE, EPA, HUD) and industrial collaborators. Current research examines air, energy and people flows, contaminant sources, sinks and transport, energy demands, supplies and storage, building and urban design, materials and enclosure assemblies as well as how they affect the indoor air quality, urban microclimate and energy efficiencies of buildings and cities under current and future climate conditions. Current research in this area includes the development of nano and bio-based materials and panels for new and retrofitted buildings and real-time monitoring and assessment of building energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality, and operational control optimizations. The Postdoctoral Researcher's research will be focused on developing methods for testing and modeling the performance of materials, real-time performance monitoring, and optimization of integrated HVAC and domestic hot water heating supply systems, supporting externally sponsored projects. For broadening the training, they will also have the opportunity and will be encouraged to exchange and collaborate with other faculty members associated with SyracuseCoE covering research ranging from quantum/nano/material scales, to building, neighborhood and urban scales, and to regional, continental and global climate scales. This is a full-time position beginning in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025.
Qualifications
A doctoral degree in mechanical, environmental or architectural engineering or equivalent is required. Experience in areas of building materials and enclosures, material and assembly testing and evaluation, and environmental and energy system control is preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
Candidate is expected to have training in materials and mechanical systems with strong hands on skills in experimental setup, instrumentation, and analytical skills and a publication record commensurate with professional experience. Should be conversant with various sensors, instrumentation and methods for material testing and characterization as well as real time sensing and control.
Responsibilities
Develop experimental facilities and instrumentation for testing material specimens and wall panel assemblies, evaluate the performance of retrofitted buildings through real-time monitoring he building's energy consumptions, indoor environmental quality, and occupant behavior, and develop advanced control methods for practical applications, supporting two externally funded projects. Candidate has the opportunity to propose and define the specific focus of their work in the multi-scale physical testbeds development and collaborate with graduate students in the area. Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals. Collaborate on proposals for external funding. Present research at professional conferences. Supervise and collaborate with graduate students.
