Application for Postdoctoral researcher in experimental ultrafast science and quantum dynamics
The Princeton University Department of Chemistry seeks to hire Postdoctoral or more senior researchers for an appointment in Prof. Herschel Rabitz's laboratory, working on a project titled Nanoscale Imaging and Single-Molecule Metabolite Detection within a Biological Cell by exploiting Laser-driven Quantum Coherences . This project aims to develop an instrument of unprecedented capability that will allow for the identification and mapping of any small molecule within its native single cell environment at nanometer resolution. Determining the spatial distribution of small molecules within cells is crucial for understanding fundamental biological mechanisms. The successful development of this instrument will permit addressing a host of unsolved problems in biology and has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of metabolism in healthy and diseased cells. The candidate will work within a highly interactive team, having strengths in physics, chemistry, and biology. The project is under the direction of Prof. Herschel Rabitz in the Department of Chemistry and Prof. Martin Jonikas in the Department of Molecular Biology. The research will consist of assembling, testing, and advanced development of a novel scanning probe microscope with ultrahigh spatial resolution (~nm) and single-molecule chemical species discrimination within a single biological cell at liquid helium temperature. Applicants should have experience with one or more of the following: ultrafast lasers and optics, nonlinear spectroscopy and experimental quantum control. Essential Qualifications: Candidates must hold a Ph.D. and have working knowledge of required laboratory equipment and materials; the ability to work independently within a team environment; and have excellent organizational, record-keeping, and verbal and written communication skills. In addition, candidates must be self-motivated, with excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail. The Term of appointment is based on rank. Positions at the postdoctoral rank are for one year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding; those hired at more senior ranks may have multi-year appointments. These positions are subject to the University's background check policy. The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University. Applicants must apply online at ( and submit a cover letter, CV and, 3 references. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
