POSITION SUMMARY: To lead the praise music ministry for Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, in consultation with the pastor and other team members, in a way that is consistent with the church's mission, values, and theology. This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, at $50/hour.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General

  • Oversee and support weekly music activities, including planning and implementing musical offerings.

Team and Resource Management

  • Prepare and lead the Praise Team in weekly rehearsals and Sunday morning services. This includes selecting appropriate music suited for the congregation and aligning with the liturgy, theme or occasion of the service.
  • Arrange music for the Praise Team vocalists and prepare music materials for the other Praise Team music participants. This includes selecting and editing accompanying, musical backing tracks, lead sheets/sheet music—anything needed for musical execution.
  • Maintain the music library and keep a current inventory of musical instruments and equipment.
  • Along with the organist/pianist, supervise the maintenance of the organ, pianos, and all other musical instruments and related equipment in the church.

Programming

  • Arrange for a substitute for rehearsals and services during any absences.
  • Provide music for additional services during the seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Hire additional musicians as needed and as the budget allows.

Outreach

  • Be available for consultation and/or participation in other events or services that require music, such as weddings, memorial services, and outside concert groups that have met the protocol required for use of the church facility.

Administration and Communication

  • Coordinate with volunteers and/or staff regarding worship service details such as the selection of music titles and other information for printed and projected worship materials (e.g., bulletins, media presentation).
  • Purchase and catalog new music and equipment.
  • Comply with established budget requirements for the worship funds.

MUSICAL COMPETENCIES:

Musical Expertise:

  • Versatility in Music Styles: Ability to perform and oversee a wide range of music styles, including upbeat Christian Contemporary Music (CCM), hymns, folk, camp songs, spirituals, etc.
  • Instrument Proficiency: Possess proficient musical abilities with emphasis on the keyboard (piano or organ) or guitar.
  • Music Arrangement: Ability to arrange and/or adapt music to accommodate different musician skill levels.

Leadership and Development:

  • Worship Leadership: Ability to lead worship music effectively and develop individuals as musicians and worship leaders.

Technical Skills:

  • Technical Knowledge (preferred): Experience with technical aspects of modern services, such as in-ear monitoring systems, backing track management, and soundboards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent musical skills and experience gained through formal or informal training.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check and training as required by Safe Church guidelines.
