THE OPPORTUNITY

The next President and CEO of United Way of Massachusetts Bay (UWMB) will lead the operationalization and implementation of its recently launched community impact strategy, centering the entire organization and its resources around building equitable communities. UWMB is seeking a dynamic organizational leader who can compellingly articulate the mission and plan and will extend the impact of UWMB through their leadership in the community. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President and CEO will also lead in communicating the vision and program objectives to internal and external constituencies and will work collaboratively with the board, staff, and volunteers in formulating policy, developing strategy, raising funds, and achieving performance standards. Key achievements for the CEO will be best defined in terms of the organization's success in having more measurable impact within the five impact areas. This leader will provide inspiring leadership to external and internal constituencies. They will also be responsible for skillfully leading fund development strategy efforts while balancing a wide array of interests and needs. As a guiding force, they will significantly elevate UWMB's visibility across its service areas and beyond. This leader will bring transformational leadership to all areas of UWMB, including overall responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial, talent, and management operations of the organization.

The President and CEO must embrace the organization's mission and be willing to be accountable for the success of UWMB's community impact agenda. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • As a trusted and respected voice for UWMB, serve as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the organization's mission, programs, and services.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to building trust, collaboration, respect, accountability, and transparency at all levels of the organization.
  • Manage a highly effective staff and recommend organizational structures that allow for the supervision and evaluation of quality execution while building unity and shared vision across teams.
  • Foster a culture of engagement while convening and leading diverse constituencies from across the organization to achieve excellence.
  • Provide guidance and direction to the organization on all financial matters, operational and staff development issues.
  • Elevate the brand and reputation of UWMB as a convener and influencer, fostering collaboration with the community at-large.
  • Ensure the near-term and long-term financial viability of UWMB, including through innovative methods of fundraising and engagement of the next generation of donors.
  • Lead the efforts of UWMB in exploring linkages, partnerships, and collaborations with external organizations and groups, including its constituent agencies, other funders, and government to maximize the impact of the human services sector.
  • Recruit, retain, motivate, and inspire professional staff, volunteers, current and prospective donors, and partners.

They will have a sense of urgency to cultivate the talent of every individual to accelerate impact and guide the work of UWMB.

Visionary Leader

The President & CEO will be a forward-looking ‘big picture thinker' who is skilled at leading complex organizations through change, setting new heights for UWMB while building upon existing momentum. They will be successful at balancing the existing community impact strategy with being nimble and innovative in response to emerging community needs. The President & CEO will bring experience understanding the process of gathering, harnessing, and leveraging data to drive desired impact. The ideal candidate will also provide constant thoughtful leadership and promote a forum for creative and innovative ideas.

Business and People Management

The next leader will implement best-in-class management practices and planning, ensuring that day-to-day operations are aligned with strategic goals. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated record of setting priorities, leading organizations through transition and evolution, as well as measuring impact. They will be a strategic thinker who will work with UWMB's senior leadership team and Board to establish plans and methods to reach operational objectives, build sustainability into existing programs, and develop a business model that allows the organization to realize its full potential, securing its fiscal viability for the long term. They will be passionate about leading high performing teams to achieve measurable outcomes while guiding organizational growth and development of staff. This leader will value bringing operational discipline to ensure appropriate efficiency across all UWMB initiatives and activities, consistently monitoring progress that will lead to more opportunities to propel the work forward.

Skilled & Creative Fundraiser

The President & CEO will be a strategic fundraiser who can enthusiastically define and convey the relevance of UWMB's work to existing and new funding sources. In close collaboration with the leadership team and Board, they will be exceptional at exploring new ways to comprehensively invest in UWMB's focus communities. This leader will bring a keen understanding of the changing landscape of philanthropy, will have evidence of successful innovation in fundraising and be eager to engage the next generation in giving. An effective storyteller, the President & CEO will exude an authentic, confident, and humble spirit enabling them to represent UWMB with a wide range of donors, including corporate leaders, foundations, community partners, and government agencies. They will also embrace digital transformation and technological innovation as it pertains to fund development and donor stewardship.

Champion for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI)

The President & CEO will lead by example and promote a workplace environment that champions diversity, equity, access, inclusion and belonging at all levels. They will bring a deep understanding of the significant role UWMB can play in addressing barriers to the achievement of financial well-being and quality of life for many in the community. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to active listening, learning, and amplifying the voices of all. The President & CEO will recognize and prioritize equity and inclusion as a strategic business imperative and will have the ability to attract, retain, and develop diverse talent and partners. The President & CEO will maintain strong working relationships with key leaders in the community and leverage those relationships and opportunities for the advancement of UWMB. This leader will develop positive and productive relationships, creatively building consensus and engaging people and institutions towards achieving ambitious goals in alignment with UWMB's community impact strategy. In addition, they will effectively bring people to the table to engage in important conversations regarding community investment and capacity building. They will be courageous and skilled at encouraging others to make bold decisions that will benefit the greater Boston community. The President & CEO will create a powerful sense of shared purpose and engagement in the future of UWMB amongst community members. As the ultimate ambassador for UWMB's work, they will be comfortable with engaging the media and a wide range of audiences.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $325,000 – $365,000 with a generous benefits package. UWMB offers excellent benefits including a BCBS PPO plan, dental, a 401(k-retirement savings with company match and an employer base contribution, and a generous PTO policy which includes extended holiday time and summer hours. Currently, UWMB offers staff a hybrid work schedule. The future work schedule will be determined by the new CEO.
