JOB SUMMARY

The Press Coordinator-1 will provide strategic support for the HISD Press Office and communications department. This position requires excellent writing skills, experience in a media relations role and providing on-camera interviews and statements. A combination of strategic thinking, strong leadership skills, and the ability to drive results.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Directs development of news stories, through the writing and reporting of news releases and the planning and execution of news events.

2. Responds to inquiries from the news media by coordinating the collection of information and reporting information to the media. Serves as a spokesperson for the district.

3. Provides guidance to principals, district executives and other employees in the management of media issues, including crisis situations.

4. Develops district-wide public and media relations campaigns that promote information about the district to the public. Assists communications department in creation and implementation of annual media strategy. Establishes and utilizes media contacts to maximize positive district exposure.

5. Oversees media interviews with district administrators, personnel, and students. Monitors press coverage for accuracy and responds to inaccurate statements.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

6. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with local, statewide, and national media outlets.

7. Write press releases, media statements, speeches, memoranda as well as reports and briefs communicating the District's goals and messages.

8.

Coordinates content and works with the social media team to highlight student and staff achievements.

9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

At least 5 years working in a communications role. Some experience in media relations role preferred.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

Work Leadership. Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees but does not have formal supervisory responsibility. Leading and directing is restricted to monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of the same duties they are leading.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

Acts as a trusted advisor and becomes involved in the customer's decision-making process including presenting alternatives and information and applying persuasion and negotiation skills in the resolution of problems.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment and may include campus visits and local travel.

Ability to carry and/or lift less than 45 pounds.
