Job Description:
Summary The operator is responsible for make ready, operating, and maintaining a web press. They ensure the production of high-quality products in a cost-effective manner. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Roll Stand:
    • Opens rolls and saves tags.
    • Inspects rolls for damage.
    • Correctly inserts and inflates the roll shaft.
    • Hangs and aligns rolls.
    • Webs up the press from the roll-stand to the folder.
    • Sets web guide sensors to match the correct paper width.
  • Folder:
    • Sets nip rollers.
    • Changes and/or adjusts cut blades, head perfs, tucker blades.
    • Adjusts and sets workbook perf, folder pins, cutting rubber, spine perf, shear pins, and stripping fingers.
    • Sets the former board and/or diverts compensators to the paper size.
    • Checks and adjusts the chopper for the correct fold configuration.
  • Stacker:
    • Adjusts paper feed guides to the stacker.
    • Sets jogger width and stacker belt tension.
    • Adjusts stacker and table speeds.
    • Centers strapping on bundles and sets bundle length.
    • Changes strapping reel as needed.
  • Print Unit:
    • Engages print units and remotes.
    • Correctly installs end blocks and hangs blankets.
    • Checks water flow to units.
    • Sets and adjusts the dampening system and rollers.
  • Make Ready:
    • Reads the quality plan and webs the press.
    • Checks plates for imperfections and hangs plates.
    • Engages blanket washers and checks washer cloth.
    • Compares sigs to blue lines, samples, or color proofs.
    • Adjusts and sets ink/water balance and ink density.
    • Ensures folds are square and free of imperfections.
    • Adjusts the press register.
    • Ensures the proper person is available for press checks.
    • Completes and applies press check labels.
    • Obtains the old web press checklist and coordinates with customers for OKs.
  • Press Run:
    • Safely operates stacker/bundler.
    • Installs strapping material and palletizes finished bundles.
    • Removes full pallets from the press area.
    • Pulls copies during the run and performs quality checks.
    • Checks bundler copies for quality issues.
    • Pulls and numbers control copies.
    • Ensures all press equipment is adjusted and running correctly.
    • Completes all documentation and checklists.
  • Wash Up:
    • Washes up the press.
    • Correctly mounts wash up trays into print units.
    • Removes ink from fountains and washes ink out of rollers using proper chemicals.
    • Cleans ink knives, end blocks, and fountain.
    • Cleans and returns wash up trays to the proper area.
    • Returns unused ink to the designated area and properly discards non-returnable ink.
  • Maintenance:
    • Maintains and lubricates the press according to the procedures outlined in the maintenance document.
  • Housekeeping:
    • Keeps the press area orderly at all times, using any downtime to clean and maintain the pressroom.
  • Environmental:
    • Disposes of all waste materials properly.
    • Records necessary information regarding wastes or chemical use on appropriate logs.
    • Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Understands station operations and ensures all work is performed according to ISO 9002 quality system procedures, workstation documents, and OSHA safety requirements.
  • Miscellaneous:
    • Performs various tasks as required from time to time by management representatives.

Employees are frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electric shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually quite loud. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, talk, and hear. Keyboarding activities on a computer are required. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. This position requires close vision, including lateral and vertical vision, depth perception, color distinction, and the ability to adjust focus.
