The Principal Engineer will play a pivotal role in shaping and guiding our technical initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives, and driving innovation across multiple domains. Reporting to the VP, Software Engineering, this role focuses on early project phases, providing technical blueprints, and aligning engineering teams for successful implementation. This role is crucial in scoping and shaping business initiatives during the early planning phases. The ideal candidate will work ahead of the engineering teams, coordinating with stakeholders to define requirements and implement proofs of concept (POCs) to validate assumptions and confirm feasibility. The candidate will be responsible for providing a comprehensive technical blueprint that ensures the solution meets desired business outcomes. Additionally, the Principal Engineer will align the engineering teams and serve as a technical advisor throughout the project implementation. This includes resolving any technical blockers that surface during the process. The role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to navigate complex and ambiguous situations effectively

About The Role

As a Principal Engineer you will: Early Project Phases:

  • Lead early project phase initiatives, working ahead of the engineering teams to ensure readiness for development.
  • Implement proofs of concept (POCs) to validate designs and assumptions, providing a solid foundation for the engineering teams.

Technical Documentation and Strategy:

  • Write technical blueprints, including system design, technical specifications, implementation plans, technical roadmaps, and design documents.
  • Drive long-term technical vision and strategy, designing solutions that align with business objectives and desired outcomes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Initiate and participate in cross-functional activities, ensuring successful project execution.
  • Serve as the engineering voice, shaping and clarifying early phase business initiatives.
  • Influence engineering teams across multiple domains.
  • Strengthen organization-wide engineering culture through leadership, coaching, and mentorship.
  • Provide specialist advice to middle and senior leadership on complex issues.
  • Offer technical mentorship and coaching to Senior and Lead engineers.
  • Be seen as a technical role model and leader with an external presence.

Delivery and Business Acumen:

  • Design technical solutions that align with long-term business objectives.
  • Act as a technical domain expert, consulting on application and infrastructure development projects.
  • Present effectively to large groups, influence key stakeholders, and negotiate solutions.
  • Recognize problems in existing designs and recommend remedies.
  • Develop innovative concepts, services, technologies, or products.
  • Identify where technology can cause a transformational shift in business and communicate to leadership.
  • Anticipate internal or external business challenges and apply knowledge of external trends.
  • Recommend process, product, or service improvements.

Leadership:

  • Directly influence strategy and development affecting a whole sub-business, function, or major product area.
  • Lead functional teams of technical experts and facilitate integration of their work.
  • Communicate solutions and technology strategy to various stakeholders.
  • Act as an advisor to senior management in your area of expertise.

About You:

You are a fit for the position of Principal Engineer if your background includes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field and 7 years of progressive work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience building web applications in an Agile environment based on modern JavaScript architecture and frameworks.
  • Significant experience in software architecture and front-end (web) product development.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering robust, high-volume, highly reliable, and highly available web products for customer-facing applications.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms, including a basic understanding of scalability, security, serverless architecture, and cost control concerns.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate highly complex and ambiguous situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to take ownership of multiple issues and project deliverables while continuing to deliver high-quality results that are aligned with project schedules.
  • Experience managing a distributed team and providing mentorship, vision, and motivation.
  • Solid knowledge of Typescript, HTTP, JSON, JavaScript, AJAX, XML, XHTML, and RESTful web services.
  • Experience with Amazon AWS, SQL and relational databases, Apache or other HTTP servers, Tomcat or other J2EE containers, Linux/shell script, and versioning systems (e.g., SVN, Git).

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The location(s) for this role include one or more of the following metro locations: Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $173,300 - $321,800. The base compensation range in other locations may vary. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
