MAIN FUNCTION:
Responsible for processing all ED Physician orders and coordinating all ED activities including telephones. Reports to the Coordinator - Emergency Department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains and insures professionalism and composure in dealing with patients, families and friends in person or by telephone with the use of Guest Relations principles.
a. Addresses patients, visitors and co-workers in a pleasant and respectful courteous manner at all times.
b. Is responsible for all provider contact with specialist, transfer center or ordering providers.
c. Greets telephone callers, visitors and patients.
e. Is responsible for all Qliq communication for the department.
f. Accurately discharges patients including expiration.
g. Helps arrange patient transportation and/or transfers needed. Needs to be able to have papers for legals and medical examiner death certificate.
2. Treats all information relative to the patient or family as confidential information, which must not be discussed with others unless it pertains directly to the care of the patient.
3. Be understanding of the emotional state of the patient and or family, friends and always place this in the proper perspective. Acts as a liaison between patients, families, employees, physicians and always attentive to customer's needs.
4. Is responsible to accurately and timely enter orders for diagnostic procedures to be performed at the direction of nursing and medical staff, (taken from physician's orders, places calls to departments so test can be completed i.e., lab x-ray, CT, US, stress lab, respiratory therapy, IV therapy).
a. Notifies and follows thru on orders (Labs, EKG, and ABG, etc.) with appropriate staff EMA, RN, MD.
b. Organizes emergency department charts.
c. Has current knowledge of computers and programs, fax machines and copiers to include minor maintenance.
d. Completes medical records released evening and weekends for the entire hospital.
5. Is responsible to process requests for admission of Emergency Department patient at the request of nursing or medical staff. Appropriate communication with case management/admission related to assignments of beds.
Have the knowledge so patients are admitted to correct floors.

6. Places calls and pages to medical staff and other requested parties (e.g. Social Work, Chaplain, Case Management, Crisis Intervention, Medical Records, EKG's, etc.) per request. Maintains copies of on-call schedules for easy access within the department, posts schedules on bulletin board, and makes appropriate changes as necessary.
a. Answers telephone calls in a courteous manner, respecting the patient's need for privacy.
b. Manages many telephone lines simultaneously while politely asking if caller is able to hold.
c. Answers pages for other medical personnel currently in the Emergency Dept.
d. Telephones or pages physicians and other disciplines and keeps appropriate phone logs.
7. Is responsible for discharging patient in computer with accurate time and verifying T sheets are complete. Assists with admitting bed placement in the computer with accurate times and assignment.
8. Creates a daily patient visit and admission log, maintains a department copy and gives to outside registration for distribution. The logs will include all reportable through- put time. This is used to complete reportable indicators.
9. Assists in finding replacement Staff - (RN, EMA, NA) when staff call in as requested by Charge RN. Keeps charge RN up-to-date of progress.
10. Demonstrates and assures the following:
a. Medical Record sent to appropriate location with patient or returned to Health Information Services.
b. Keeps bulletin board neat and up-to-date.
c. Participates on QI teams as appropriate.
11. Maintains a complete understanding of the Arnot Health emergency procedures and personal role in regard to fire safety, code blue and disaster procedures.
12. Communicates constructive ideas using appropriate communication for service recovery and department improvement.
13. Telepages physicians and other Arnot Health employees authorized to carry radiopagers. Pages all on call employees and physicians. Uses public address system only if no other means of communication is possible.
14. Is available to assist the switchboard operator and appropriately directs all in-coming, out-going and inter-hospital telephone calls.
15. Will be crossed trained to be able to cover Emergency department patient access representative.
16. Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.
17. EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience working in an Emergency Department preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of previous health care experience required. Computer skills and medical terminology required.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program Certification required
within 90-days of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Light physical effort. Frequently lifts 15 lbs., occasionally lifts 30 lbs., reaching and stooping required.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
Category II. Potential risk of tasks involved in exposure to Blood, Body Fluids or Tissues. Category I not a condition of employment.
