The Product Development Engineer II is responsible for partnering with sales, marketing and customers to design, engineer and develop innovative and competitive new products. The Product Development Engineer II manages each project to ensure the company's product development goals are achieved within agreed upon time and budget parameters. Development efforts will focus on the creation of new products and systems and the enhancement of existing product lines. The Product Development Engineer II will use the product development process to successfully manage all product development activities.
Responsibilities
* Assess new product ideas for strategic fit, risk, cost, schedule, available resources, technology and target pricing.
* Drive the research, design and development of new and enhanced products using the Tubelite stage-gate style product development process.
* Work with management to develop a project expense budget and track project costs.
* Establish, energize and lead cross-functional development teams for each major product initiative.
* Manage the schedules, deadlines and expenditures of projects and project team members to ensure projects and product launches are completed on time and within budget.
* Maintain appropriate project documentation and regularly communicate product development progress.
* Continually update and report on product development projects.
* Develop product data rules, engineering standards, fabrication drawings, details, procedures, installation manuals and promotional materials for new products.
* Design, build and test prototypes for physical evaluation of product designs
* Validate product performance against design specs .
* Provide ongoing support for existing products.
* Troubleshoot manufacturing issues for new products .
* Assist with the evaluation of field failures and develop solutions to prevent future occurrences.
* Provide expert technical support to sales, marketing, estimating and manufacturing departments.
* Provide direction to other Product Development engineers and team members.
* Coordinate between vendors, customers, test labs and internal resources while following the product development process.
* Occasional travel to visit customers and suppliers to provide customer support.
* Support internal and external clients with window and entrance door hardware questions.
Requirements:
* BS degree in Engineering field, or equivalent experience (structural, mechanical or design degree preferred).
* Minimum 5 years successful Product Development experience in this industry.
* Minimum 5 years experience in technical design/applications engineering in this industry.
* Working knowledge of building codes, design and testing standards.
* Thorough understanding of structural calculations.
* Ability to interpret architectural plans and specifications, mechanical drawings and related documents.
* Proficient in use of 2D and 3D CAD software (AutoCAD and Inventor preferred).
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand financial implications.
* Strong interpersonal skills and leadership skills.
* Self-starter requiring minimal supervision.
* Understanding of operable vent and entrance door hardware.
Preferred Requirements:
* P.E. License
* LEED Green Associate or LEED-AP accreditation
* Lean and Six Sigma training - Green or Black Belt
* Quality training/experience
* Experience in a leadership role
