The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Product Studies Chemist (Chemist 3) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

In this position, you will serve as a consumer products scientific expert. You will collaboratively plan, research, and draft language, and evaluate proposed policy and other published language for regulatory scientific rigor, quality, feasibility, and defensibility. You will play an integral role in ensuring public facing science around consumer products describes credible and defensible science. You will also review, correct, and draft materials about the application of regulatory testing methods, provide scientific terminology, and suitable use and application of scientific technology and concepts that apply to regulatory consumer products science and testing.

Tele-work options for this position: This position will have flexibility of a hybrid schedule, empowering work from home and office, providing less time in traffic and shrinking your carbon footprint. This position will be eligible for up to a 90% tele-work schedule. What makes this role unique?

In this role, you will collaborate, communicate, and implement appropriate application of regulatory testing methods, provide scientific terminology, discuss suitable use and application of scientific concepts with Ecology and other Agency policy and management leads, non-scientific entities, to include Legislative and other governmental staff, and public partners. You will also design, implement, document, and report unique product focused studies, and work with scientific leads, management, QA, and Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction (HWTR) policy and compliance staff in response to current and future law and rules.

What you will do:

* Serve as a consumer products scientific subject matter expert (SME) in testing, chemistry, scientific language, data use, and methods considered for use in policy planning and other tasks that direct, collect or implement scientific consumer product scientific activities at Ecology (i.e., use and application of research, secondary data assessments, data summaries, reports).

* Evaluate existing scientific inputs, data, assumptions, and/or apply professional judgement to the use of scientific language and methods applied to describing, gathering, implementing, and facilitating testing of consumer products used in making policy and regulatory decisions.

* Perform secondary data analyses on data, reports and other research applying Ecology's QA policy.

* Write reports on data analyses on data, reports and other research applying Ecology's QA policy.

* Produce draft scientific language for reports, draft rule, decision packages, and fiscal notes.

* Peer review scientific language proposals of HWTR for reports, draft rule, decision packages, and fiscal notes.

* Collaborate with EAP project managers and scientists to design, implement, document, and report on unique product focused studies.

Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

* 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent

* 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Required Qualifications:

A total of Eight years of experience and/or education as described below.

* Experience in chemistry or chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.

* Education involving a major study in chemistry or a degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry.

Two years of experience as a Chemist 2, at the department of Ecology.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

* Must obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.
