The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is looking for a Programs Manager who is passionate about community building and can bring creativity to strengthening our programs in a meaningful and collaborative setting. The AAPD Programs Manager will manage three AAPD programs: the Alumni Network, Disability Mentoring Day (DMD), and the NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship. The Programs Manager will focus on developing and strengthening these three initiatives by creating spaces and opportunities for program participants to build community connections and participate in AAPD related opportunities that will advance their career and other personal aspirations. The Programs Manager will also develop and sustain relevant external partnerships to enhance the work and outcomes of their programs. Lastly, in collaboration with the AAPD Teams (Civic Engagement, Communications, and Policy), the Programs Manager will uplift and amplify the achievements and stories of our program participants. Roles and ResponsibilitiesGeneral Programs Duties
- Build and sustain relationships with organizations to strengthen AAPD's recruitment among youth and young adults, such as post-secondary education institutions (including universities, community colleges, transition programs, etc), youth or young adult-serving disability organizations, and student-led or youth groups
- Develop evaluation tools to measure the success and impact of the programs
- Create a strong web and media presence in collaboration with the Communications team
- Other work assigned by the Sr. Programs Director
Alumni Network (60% of the time) The Alumni Network consists of program alumni from the AAPD Internship Programs, NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholars, Fannie Lou Hamer Leadership organizers, and Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leader Awardees, as well as past participants from other programmatic engagements and alumni from now inactive AAPD programs
- Design and implement recurring hybrid and virtual events throughout the year to convene alumni around community building, career advancement, and leadership development
- Develop and establish regular two-way communication engagement strategies between the Alumni Network, AAPD, and the greater disability community
- Create a process to identify professional development opportunities within AAPD's network for alumni such as serving as subject matter experts, presenters, panelists, blog post authors, and more
- Manage and engage the Alumni Network Ambassadors Council on a quarterly basis
- Establish a method for alumni to share feedback and opportunities
Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) (30% of the time) Disability Mentoring Day is a large-scale national effort coordinated by AAPD to promote career exploration and development along with ongoing mentorship relationships for high school students and young college students with disabilities. While DMD has been and continues to be officially recognized on the third Wednesday of October, the program has been expanded to be a year-round initiative.
- Recruit and convene DMD coordinators across the country to put on events to connect students and job-seekers with disabilities with career exploration opportunities
- Create events and activities in October for National Disability Employment Awareness Month and DMD to recognize the significant contributions of disabled employees in the workplace
- Plan new hybrid and virtual events around professional development and career exploration for youth and young adults
- Draft and disseminate guidance and resources for companies, organizations, vocational rehabilitation, and other agencies to independently host DMD events on the local, state, or federal level
NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media Scholarship (10% of the time) In partnership with NBCUniversal, the NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media scholarship recognizes eight current undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing a career in the media, entertainment, and communications industries. The scholars are passionate and committed to authentic storytelling and representation of people with disabilities.
- Recruit, review applications, and interview candidates for the scholarship
- Host quarterly calls with the NBCUniversal Tony Coelho Media scholars to foster a community of disabled professionals in the communications, media, and entertainment industries
- Process scholarship disbursements
- Notify scholars' universities and other relevant press regarding their award
Qualifications
- 4+ years of cumulative relevant experience (paid and unpaid), with a focus on developing and executing projects and community building
- Strong communication skills across multiple audiences and mediums
- Creative thinking and innovative approaches to determining how to better engage with various partners and community members
- Ability to be resourceful, practical, and decisive in planning and executing activities
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently on assignments
- Great organizational skills to maintain online records and files in an efficient and comprehensive manner
- Prior experience with social media and experience with building online engagement through various platforms such as Discord, Twitter, Slack, etc. AAPD's current social channels include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn
- Proficient in Google Suites, Microsoft Office, Slack and ability to learn how to use new online management tools
Selected candidates will participate in a 15-minute interview screening. Next, the candidate will participate in a 60-minute interview with the Sr. Programs Director and relevant AAPD staff. If moved forward, the candidate will have a final 30-minute interview with the President & CEO. AAPD will complete reference checks after the final interview.
