This position is located in Detroit, Michigan and works with the two (2) Federally Funded TRIO Pre-college programs: Upward Bound-SW and Upward Bound-NW. The Upward Programs provide services to over 120 high school students in grades 9th - 12th within the Detroit Public Schools Community District and Charter High Schools. Under general direction of the Project Director of TRIO Detroit Pre-college programs, the Project Coordinator assists with the day-to-day operations of the two federal TRIO projects, provides oversight, implementation, supervision and evaluation for high school students participating in the project that promote college access, student success, persistence and graduation. Serves as a liaison to community partners, educational partners, target schools and host institution. This position requires a level of independence to respond to requests from the Project Director, university personnel, school administrators, community partners, students, and parents within defined grant regulations, guidelines and procedures.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in social work, sociology, psychology, education, counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Two years of professional experience in areas related to youth programs, underrepresented populations, non-profit or educational work or similar fields.

Supervisory experience.

Strong program development/planning skills.

Ability to manage confidential information.

Ability to effectively communicate and maintain effective working relationships with participants, program staff, target school staff, participants' families, and community partners.

Demonstrated experience, understanding, and commitment to first-generation students, and/or students from historically underrepresented groups in higher education.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Evidence of skills and ability to utilize technology.

Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and proof of current automobile insurance coverage.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in education, social work, sociology, psychology, counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Bilingual English/Spanish with ability to read and write is highly desirable.

Experience working with low-income, first-generation youth.

Experience working with TRIO and youth programs specifically high school students.

Knowledge of post-secondary admissions, scholarship, and financial aid process.

Experience with pre-college summer residential programs.

Experience managing budgets and writing grants.

Experience with recruitment and facilitation.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provides daily oversight of Upward Bound activities, including Saturday workshops.

Assists with the coordination and supervision of Upward Bound staff (including temporary and student employees) and conducts performance evaluations of staff.

Coordinates and supervises college visits and educational field trips.

Engages in outreach efforts by preparing written communication, flyers, and newsletters, and manages social media to disseminate program information/services to key stakeholders (i.e., students, families, and partners, etc.).

Collaborates on the recruitment and selection of participants who meet the required funded to serve number and eligibility criteria.

Participates in program/organizational/departmental planning sessions, trainings, and staff meetings.

Maintains program partnerships and suggests new opportunities for collaboration.

Assists with the completion and submission of all program reports.

Enters new student data into database and ensures all provided services and activities are documented in database.

Assists with interviewing and selection of core staff for the Upward Bound Project and onboarding.

Leads interview process for Upward Bound support staff, such as academic and summer part-time temporary staff.

Maintains a case load of students as necessary to provide academic and post-secondary guidance of high school seniors.

Assists high school seniors with guidance and follow-up regarding post-secondary matriculation (i.e., FAFSA, scholarship essays, applications, and college transition).

Provides curriculum recommendations for Upward Bound Project.

Collaborates with school counselors/college advisors to review and evaluate high school transcripts.

Provides recommendations for appropriate coursework academic goals and post-secondary activities.

Supports students in developing academic and career goals for post-secondary education.

Develops and delivers presentations, workshops, and other activities on preparing for postsecondary education (i.e., career awareness, college admissions, etc.).

Maintains accurate and confidentiality of student records and confirm audit ready files.

Assists with planning and overseeing the summer component of the program and partnerships.

Assists with project evaluations and prepares/reviews monthly reconciliations for accuracy.

Ensures compliance with the Department of Education grant goals, regulations, and performance objectives.

Ensures program staff are maintaining contact with project participants.

Assists with developing and managing budget for program events and activities.

Assists with preparing project materials as needed.

Coordinates logistics for various projects (i.e., meals, transportation, field trips, etc.).

Facilitates parent/guardian meetings as scheduled to disseminate program updates and college information.

Maintains the highest level of ethical and professional conduct and confidentiality of program participants.

Relocates to the Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant campus, during the Summer Program as required.

Attends relevant professional development conferences, meetings, trainings workshops and seminars as needed and assigned by the Project Director.

Works early mornings, evenings and/or weekends as required.

Travels to target high schools and makes home visits as needed and transports students during field trips as necessary.

Uses good judgement to resolve issues.

Performs other duties as assigned.
