Job Summary

Supports the Department mission by supporting the investigative process with property room support. Ensures that all evidence is submitted to the appropriate laboratory within statute guidelines. Also supports the Department by performing handling and dispositioning evidence per statute to protect the integrity of the evidence. Exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative. Is vested with moderate decision-making latitude within parameters prescribed by the department's policies, procedures, and guidelines. Interfaces frequently with the general public; state, federal, and county law enforcement agencies; municipal court personnel and internal department personnel.

Essential Job Functions and Other Important Duties

* Assure that evidence is collected and stored according to best practices.

* Store and retrieve all property and evidence collected, seized, or kept by the police department assuring a continuous chain of custody.

* Maintain all records related to property and evidence.

* Maintain asset inventory for the police department.

* Perform annual inventory and audit of evidence held at the police department.

* Manage the delivery of evidence to and from court, laboratories, prosecutor's offices and other locations.

* Maintain knowledge of the law and policies regarding evidence and property management, including the process for final disposition.

* Arrange for abandoned or forfeited property and evidence to be properly disposed.

* Testify as required in court regarding the handling and custody of property and evidence.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Formal Education: High School Diploma or GED; Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, forensic or related field is preferred.

Relatable Work Experience: N/A

Training (Licenses(s) and/or Certification(s): Valid Class C driver license.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in inventory control or evidence handling is preferred. IAPE or TAPEIT certification is preferred.

Disclaimer: Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is define as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed & Environmental Factors and Other Physical Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:

* Knowledge of general municipal police operations, City and Departmental Policies and Procedures, all appropriate laws, including city ordinances, use and care of city equipment, and contemporary forensic related technologies, methods, and best practices.

* General office knowledge and skills including but not limited to contemporary computer skills in word processing, data collection systems and related software, spread sheets and specialized programs utilized by the department.

* Knowledge of court procedures relating to handling and storage of evidence as well as legal guidelines pertaining to the maintenance and control of evidence; records management and inventory techniques; occupational hazards and safety practices.

* Pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations including those related to the safekeeping and disposition of property and evidence.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other agencies, officials, and general public; analyze situations and develop quick, effective and reasonable courses of action that comply with law and policy; communicate effectively in all mediums; perform all computer tasks effectively and maintain acceptable operational knowledge of standard software programs utilized by the department.

Environmental Factors and Other Physical Requirements:

* Subject to sitting and standing to perform essential functions in an office environment.

* Visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate office equipment; Occasional strenuous activity, including running, jumping, climbing, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs., or any other physical activity required to effectively complete the assigned task.

* Extended periods of sitting, driving a vehicle.

* Operation of city vehicle and other work-related equipment.

* Regularly scheduled for 5-day, 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday; overtime occasionally required.
