Job Description:

Overview:

Under direct supervision of the Support Services Manager, responsible for performing technical duties related to receiving, processing, preserving, storing, and disposing of evidence and other property submitted to the property/evidence section. Completes Chain of Custody entries and testifies in court.WORK ACTIVITIES:

* Assists in maintaining Texas Best Practices standards and necessary documentation.

* Receives, logs, categorizes, and stores property/evidence impounded by police employees, including preparing evidence tags, barcoding evidence, logging information into the computer, ensuring chain of custody is maintained, and storing the property/evidence in the vault.

* Prepares evidentiary items for trial for officers. Locates and notifies property owners and assists the public with identifying and claiming property. Releases bicycles for donation and/or auction. Completes necessary documentation.

* Must stay informed and up to date on Texas Property Laws. Must be highly organized and knowledgeable of property management.

* Performs investigative research for proper disposition of evidence and completes documents required for disposal.

* Transfer abandoned/unclaimed property as appropriate for auction, diversion and/or charity.

* Transport disposed evidence to approved disposal sites.

* Releases property to citizens after research completed and confirmation.

* Maintains current knowledge of federal, state, and local laws related to property/evidence management

* Assists in maintaining medical disposal box. Assists in maintaining paraphernalia and drug bins.

* Assists with inventories and audits of all property and evidence as required by policy and Texas Best Practices.

* Regularly maintains (including cleanliness) property room, evidence lockers, work areas, and other supplies.

* Handles and deposits currency following established procedures.

* Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance. May be required to report after regularly scheduled work hours as needed.

* Assists other employees as needed.

* Adheres to personal safety, departmental policy, administrative orders, and state and federal law.

* Follows appropriate chain of command.

* Informs supervisor of all work activities.

* Performs other duties as assigned.BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

* Must have a valid Texas driver's license and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.

* Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test, polygraph and psychological exam, and thorough background checks (including criminal history).

EDUCATION:

* High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

* One year of general office work experience is required.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

* Frequent climbing, balancing, reaching, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and manual dexterity.

* Must be able to read, see, hear, talk, write, and sit for long periods of time; and enunciate clearly, precisely, and effectively with a pleasing voice tone quality.

* May be required to move various items weighing up to 52 pounds with the use of a dolly for assistance.

* Work is typically performed in both standard office and outdoor environments, with potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.

* Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, infectious diseases, and criminal suspects.KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

* Knowledge of inventory management principles.

* Knowledge of evidence and abandoned property laws.

* Skilled in operating a computer and related software applications.

* Must have a working knowledge of or be able to be trained to utilize specific evidence tracking software.

* Must be able to read and interpret Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, lab reports, case dispositions, and other law manuals.

* Must have excellent English communicative skills to include spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

* Must be able to follow oral and written directives; administer multiple projects; prioritize and organize work assignments; and meet deadlines.

* Must be able to work in a team setting and foster a cooperative working environment which maintains a positive image of the department and promotes harmonious relations among employees or between employees and the public.

* Must work effectively and efficiently with citizens and the public and maintain a pleasant and friendly demeanor.

* Must maintain a strong customer service focused attitude.

* Ability to be on-call.
