Overview
The Prototype Lab Technician works with the Prototype Manager and design/engineering teams to produce works-like and looks-like prototypes of products in development or revision. In this role, they will play a crucial part in the manufacturing process, ensuring all prototypes meet quality requirements and are completed on time.
Essential Functions
- Design and develop prototypes using CAD software and machining tools.
- Operate metal lathe, 3-Axis CNC Mill, and other machining equipment to fabricate and modify prototype parts.
- Utilize all shop tools for working in wood, metal, plastics, textiles, and finishing.
- Operate and maintain 3d printer (FDM) and support equipment used in 3d printing.
- Demonstrate safe use of all shop equipment to design team members. Enforce safe practices and make safety products available.
- Collaborate and problem-solve with designers and engineers to ensure accurate and efficient prototyping.
- Ensure design team follows all safety policies and procedures. Makes safety products available to design team members.
- Manage and organize prototype shop.
- Research and advise on material choices for prototyping and production that reflect Humanscale s pursuit of a more fully sustainable practice.
- Participate in the purchase, set-up, and maintenance of equipment.
- Monitor stock of workshop supplies and order as needed.
- Participate in testing and iterating on prototypes to ensure functionality and quality.
- Maintain and coordinate upkeep of design studio work area and prototyping shop.
- Support overseeing on and off-site storage areas.
- Assist in coordinating shipping and receiving for the Design studio.
Qualifications
- 3 years of related work experience.
- Degree in a related field, such as Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or Fine Art. A combination of education and experience is acceptable.
- Demonstrates a good work ethic and commitment to efficiency and quality in your work
- Strong understanding of machining processes and materials/experience with prototyping and fabrication techniques.
- Uses creativity and analytical skills to solve problems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Passion for sustainable innovation in prototyping practice.
- Ability to successfully work independently and as part of a team.
- Capable of multitasking and working in a fast-paced environment, adapting as priorities change.
- Works onsite from New York Design Studio 5 days a week.
COMPUTER SKILLS
- Some proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Machining tools (e.g., CNC, lathe, mill)
- 3d printing (FDM Stratasys F370)

Salary Range: $62,308-$90,884
