This person serves as chief academic officer of the university. The administrative leader is responsible for the following job functions:
- Assists in fulfilling the University mission as a teaching institution with high quality academic programs and learning environment. Provides leadership to ensure divisional support of the mission; reviews and approves master plans and progress reports; evaluates progress towards their accomplishment. Ensures implementation of the University's strategic plan related to the academic affairs operations.
- Ensures the academic curricula supports the University mission; ensures program mix supports regional economic development and governing board expectations; and provides leadership for accreditation, governing board, state and federal requirements.
- Administration and supervision of the academic colleges, Frazar Memorial Library, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, E-Learning & Testing Services, and other units within the Academic Affairs Division.
- Ensures quality educational environment for students and program delivery is provided in an efficient manner; ensures fair application of the faculty evaluation guidelines that include teaching, scholarly work, and service; ensures processes for employee evaluation are upheld.
- Works collaboratively with all divisions of the university for the betterment of the academic enterprise.
- Coordinate specifically with the Division of Student Affairs to strategize and synergize efforts relating to student retention.
- Participates in governing board meetings and represents the University as requested.
- Is a member of the President's direct staff and serves as chair of the Academic Advisory Council. The Academic Advisory Council is responsible for development and implementation of academic enrollment related policies, procedures, and programs impacting the educational mission of the University. The provost disseminates approved policies and procedures to appropriate personnel.
- Provides leadership for shared governance and a collegial community.
- Responsible for maintaining competency with respect to knowledge of NCAA rules, ensuring compliance with NCAA rules, and reporting to the Athletics Compliance Coordinator any knowledge of violation of NCAA, Southland Conference, and/or related institutional rules external regulations.
- Responsible for maintaining competency and up to date knowledge of University of Louisiana System rules and bylaws, Board of Regents policies and procedures, SACSCOC, State, and Federal standards and regulations pertaining to higher education; responsible for ensuring the academic and enrollment enterprise maintains compliance with governing board, accreditation, and Federal regulations.
- Responsible for budgeting for the academic enterprise and for creating salary increase plan for faculty increases. Works collaboratively with the Budget Officer to monitor fiscal health of the division.
- Promotes a positive image and maintains a positive work ethic so that job responsibilities and miscellaneous assignments are completed in the best interest of the University in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Works with Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Student Government Association, Athletics Department, Alumni Association, McNeese Foundation, Facilities Operations, and external agency representatives to ensure broad support for the quality of the learning environment.
- Promotes faculty and student scholarship and seeks support for the efforts, support grant funding efforts.
- Provides oversight to ensure demonstrated evidence of compliance with required accreditation standards for both institutional and programmatic accrediting bodies.
- Provides leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of student-centered approaches to academic policies and practices that support student success.
- Provides leadership and support to enhance and advance university strategic priorities for diversity and inclusion, information technology utilization, student recruitment, retention, graduation, and community engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the President or other authority figure.
Required/Preferred Qualifications Required:
- Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution
- Teaching and scholarly record to support eligibility for tenure at full professor level
- Experience in working with budget allocation and related decision making
- Experience in working with data analysis to support decision making
- Experience in working with institutional accreditation and Federal regulations, and ability to provide leadership in maintaining compliance
- Evidence of the understanding of the importance of student recruitment, retention, and integrity of academic enterprise
- Leadership in the higher education academic sector as a dean or department head
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills
- An understanding of, and currency in, academic and scholarly work
- Proven leadership skills
Preferred:
- Experience working with people in complex organizations
- Experience in an academic dean's position in a four-year collegiate setting
- Effective conflict management and resolution skills
- Experience with and understanding of higher education policy in Louisiana
- Proven record of innovativeness and team building
