PROGRAM BACKGROUND:The Behavior Health Department provides mental health services to children aged 3 to 21 that have been placed in MercyFirst care. Children placed in care are more likely than not to be exposed to adverse childhood experiences and traumatic stress, the Behavior Health Department takes a strength-based, trauma-informed child centered approach to service delivery.
SUMMARY:The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner shall serve as a member of the clinical staff and provide psychiatric input to the treatment planning team. Prescribe and monitor children's medications and educate families of benefits, risks, and side effects.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Graduate of an accredited Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program
- Graduate of an accredited master's degree Program as a Nurse Practitioner with current New York State licensure
- 2 years clinical experience in pediatrics.
- Knowledge of or experience in foster care or similar pediatric populations.
- Valid DEA license.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record.
RESPONSIBILITIES:- Provides direct evaluation and treatment of clients according to the scope of practice and incompliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations to include NYSED where applicable.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for clients.
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations and provide opinions on diagnoses and indications for psychotropic medication.
- Works with the Treatment Team members to establish treatment goals for youth/children utilizing historical and current information available.
- Ongoing consultation and training of parents and staff to improve the delivery of services and client outcomes.
- Provides emergency and after-hours behavioral health consultation.
- Provide ongoing medication management.
- Assist in psychiatric hospitalizations.
- Complete psychiatric progress notes and progress notes on all interventions within established timeframes
- Record medication and laboratory orders and follow up medication reviews.
- Report behaviors believed to be symptomatic, emotional, physical, or psychological disturbances.
- De-escalate emotional and/or physical outbursts using therapeutic crisis intervention.
- Respond to emergencies as needed and/or directed.
- Understand and apply knowledge of child and adolescent development.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and staff.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Follow all of MercyFirst's established policies and procedures.
