DescriptionDescription The Sands College of Performing Arts at Pace University is seeking a dynamic and experienced technician to serve as the Part-time Head Stitcher. The Wardrobe Supervisor works on the Sands Mainstage Productions during the academic semesters, assisting the Costume Shop department and student crews. Position Duties
  • Assist the costume shop department with setting the shop construction standards and coordinating the flow of the costume builds through the Costume Shop
  • Assist with the stitching, finishing and alterations of assigned costume elements
  • Complete all assigned projects in an efficient, safe and timely manner while maintaining the integrity of the designer's vision
  • Sew assigned costume pieces by hand or machine
  • Complete hand and finish work as assigned
  • Occasionally participate in the safe practice and appropriate use of common chemical-based products found in a costume shop including, but not limited to, dye, spray paint, barge, contact cement, spray adhesives, etc.
  • Maintain a high level of craftsmanship and artistic quality while working within deadline and budget
  • Assist with fittings as needed
  • Assist with the pulling, inventorying, maintenance and transportation of costumes as needed
  • Assist with the maintenance and laundry of costumes as needed
  • Participate in the end of the day shop cleaning and organization projects as needed
  • Participate in the maintenance, cleaning and organization of the shop, storage, tools and equipment to ensure a clean and safe environment
  • Ensure that the costume shop work environments, fittings, and all other workspaces and activities under the costume department's purview are safe, inclusive and respective for performers, designers and staff
  • Maintain discretion and diplomacy in all activities to ensure that students feel supported and safe
  • In addition to the department supervisor, Costume Shop Manager, the Wardrobe Supervisor will also be under the direction of the Director of Production.
  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Work Hours Exact hours are based on the production schedule and needs for each production. Maximum of 20 hours per week. Schedule is made and agreed upon prior to the start of each semester. Some weekend and evening hours are required. RequirementsQualifications
  • The ideal individual will have a strong drive to provide high-quality work, the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication, organizational skills and the ability to work as a part of the team.
  • Ability to manage time and productivity effectively
  • Ability to multitask and achieve tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in the operation and maintenance with domestic and industrial sewing machines and sergers
  • Ability to skillfully operate a variety of sewing machines including but not limited to: single needle industrial; industrial zig-zag; overlock, merrow or serger; domestic straight and zig-zag machines, blind hemmer
  • Proficiency in a variety of hand and machine sewing techniques
  • Experience in costume crafts such as dying and distressing preferred
  • Experience in fittings for theater, dance and/or film preferred
  • Creative problem-solving
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with members of the costume department, including student labor and designers
  • Ability to work with learning students
  • An understanding of body diversity and a commitment to leading a body positive costume shop and fitting room
  • Ability to work well under pressure and respond calmly, with curiosity and efficiency to notes generated during the production, rehearsal and tech process
  • Ability to work in an environment with adapting priorities based on the needs of the production and shop, while maintaining a spirit of creative thinking and problem-solving
  • Drive to collaborate to achieve common goals, flexible and detail-oriented.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Team player that requires minimal guidance to accomplish tasks that involve instructing, coaching, demonstrating, supervising, and working alongside students of various experience levels to teach them necessary technical skills.
Requirements
  • 3 years of experience in the field
  • BA or BFA in technical theatre or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to lift, carry and move up to 50 pounds of equipment, up and down stairs in varied lighting conditions
  • Ability to sit/stand for long periods of time, and bend, stoop or kneel while assisting actors, staff and/or designer in execution of duties as assigned
  • Ability to work in and with proper personal protective equipment
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment and tools
