Position Summary & ResponsibilitiesPosition Summary: The position (K0246079) The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is hiring a part-time Public Health Consultant to participate as part of a team to conduct rapid, standardized telephone interviews of patients diagnosed with Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. These interviews are our primary means of detecting foodborne and zoonotic outbreaks in Kansas and the United States. The consultant will perform interviews via telephone, assist with enteric disease outbreak detection and investigation, and perform data entry of laboratory and interview data. The consultant will work alongside epidemiologists within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Response section, and will observe patient and outbreak investigations conducted by KDHE for other reportable diseases, including vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, tickborne, and arboviral diseases. The position is located in Topeka, KS. After a period of training, work from home will be allowed. Hours are flexible but will be within the following days and times: Monday through Thursday 9 am to 8 pm and Friday 9 am to 5 pm. Must be able to work some evenings. This position would work up to 15 hours per week from October through April, and up to 25 hours per week from May through September. Minimum qualifications for these positions include 30 or more college hours in a health or science related field. Preferred qualifications are a BS in a health or science related field, such as graduate students seeking a Masters of Public Health degree. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: As a team participant, conducts case investigations of enteric diseases as assigned. Conducts case and contact interviews via telephone. Obtains patient data from health care providers or through queries of health information exchanges. Helps to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of appropriate data collection for enteric surveillance data. Conducts interviews for investigations related to outbreaks, clusters, complaints, or other supplemental questionnaires as assigned by epidemiologists. Performs data entry of interview data into the Kansas electronic disease surveillance system and other systems or databases as assigned by epidemiologists. Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Thirty or more college hours in a health or science related field. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
  • Licensing & Certification:
    • Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Thirty or more college hours in a health or science related field. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in a health or science related field.
    • Working on a degree in public health or nursing.
    • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
    • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
