Work involves performing public duties such as assessing the physical and mental health of patients, providing nursing services according to physicians' orders, locating the appropriate community resource, and referring the patient. Work is performed according to public health nurse training, OSHA standards, public health, state requirements, and county policies and procedures.*Occasional work outside of normal business hours may be required for emergency response, vaccine clinics, or outbreak management.Nursing positions are available in the following McLean County Health Department programs:Communicable Disease Clinic: A nurse in the Communicable Disease program provides a wide range of services including screening, testing, treatment, and counseling for sexually transmitted illnesses; screening, testing, and navigation of services for tuberculosis; and testing, counseling, and navigation of services for HIV/AIDS. The program also provides adult vaccinations, food borne illness investigation and follow up, and contact tracing related to reportable diseases.Immunizations Clinic: Immunization program staff are often the first contact families have with public health and play an important role in educating the public on the importance of vaccination. The position offers on the job training, however additional consideration will be given for education and experience in immunizations.Family Case Management/Better Birth Outcomes Program: A nurse in the FCM/BBO program manages a caseload of pregnant women, postpartum women and infants up to age one as well as children with an elevated blood lead level; assesses family and individual needs, provides appropriate referrals for medical and dental services; supports pregnant and postpartum women in completing pre- and post-natal visits, accessing family planning services; supports infants during the first year of life.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvides nursing care according to physicians' orders and department regulations either in the home or a clinic setting.Assists in administrating vaccines and the vaccine intake and assessment process; assists with vaccine storage, handling, and maintenance.Provides patients with information on public health procedures, treatments, and other services, and refers patient to the appropriate social or medical agency.Operates and cleans laboratory equipment used in the assessment process.Collects and compiles needs assessment data; develops goals based on data.Maintains patient and other records.Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of modern theory and practices in professional nursing.Knowledge of public health theory and practices relating to nursing.Knowledge of the physical illnesses, obvious symptoms, and appropriate medical terminology.Knowledge of community resources providing services to public health patients.Knowledge of local government operations, Human Resource related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.Ability to assess a patients' physical and mental condition according to EPSDT and other standards, and take appropriate action prescribed in physician orders or standards.Ability to keep accurate patient records and prepare reports.Ability to respond to each patient with empathy and respect.Ability to communicate in a friendly, pleasant, and courteous manner.Ability to work with clients from varied socio-economic backgrounds.Ability to work in a bilingual/bicultural environment.Ability to read, understand, and apply state and county policies and other regulations.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other employees, patients, and family members.Ability to deal properly with confidential and sensitive matters.Required QualificationsNursing Degree.Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois or in a state in which Illinois has a reciprocity agreement.Valid Illinois Driver's License.Must agree to complete applicable training programs.Physical Attributes/DemandsThe work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
