JOB SUMMARY:

The McHenry County Public Health Department has an opening for a Full Time Public Health Nurse in their Clinic and Communicable Disease Programs. A Public Health Nurse is a registered professional nurse who functions independently and exercises critical nursing judgment. This position ensures the provision of quality nursing care and health education in accordance with best nursing practices. The Public Health Nurse will provide services in the Clinic and Communicable Disease Programs.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8am - 4:30pm .

JOB FUNCTION:

* Participates in clinical services, including mobile clinics particularly for STI testing and treatment, HIV testing and counseling, respiratory illness POC testing, occasionally TB skin testing and directly observed therapy, and administering immunizations when assigned.

* Conducts surveillance and investigation of reportable diseases based on Centers for Disease Control and Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines and rules and regulations.

* Assures appropriate treatment for infectious diseases or exposure to infectious diseases, assists Health Department Investigation Team in foodborne and other disease outbreak investigations.

* Maintains current knowledge of infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases by attending seminars, trainings, satellite conferences and participating in teleconferences.

* Provides education about infectious disease and disease prevention to clients, health professionals, schools, long term care facilities, preschools, high risk populations, other community groups and health department staff using telephone, fax system, presentations, trainings and seminars,

* Provides screenings and treatment under standing orders for infectious diseases.

* Maintain cold chain of vaccine stock and assists in management of vaccine

* Proficient in using electronic data systems, data entry, gather statistics

* Position requires travel to offsite clinics and community events as assigned

* Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* An Illinois license as a Registered Nurse by examination; or an Illinois license by endorsement within six months of the initial date of employment; and

* Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN); and/or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma from an accredited School of Nursing by the Illinois Department of Registration and Education

* Basic Microsoft Office skills and knowledge

* Strong communication both written and verbal

* Bilingual preferred but not required.

Health Dept COVID vaccinations

All Health Department staff are required to be up to date on the COVID vaccination series as determined by the CDC, including the latest booster from September 2023, as a term and condition of employment with the Department. In addition, proof of all vaccines are mandatory for employment with the Health Dept., including the flu vaccine.
