Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety and the Public Safety Supervisor for assigned shifts, the Public Safety O cer (PSO) is responsible for the protection of University property and order on campus. The PSO responds to campus emergencies and provides services in the area of university safety, security, crime prevention, special events, campus information and assistance, parking and tra c control. The PSO also provides supervision of the Public Safety student sta on their assigned shift. The PSO must work well within the Student Experience Unit and have a positive interaction with students, faculty, and sta . The PSO conducts active and regular patrols of campus grounds and buildings in uniform on foot, car, and/or by bike to ensure the e ective and e cient execution of the mission of the Department of Public Safety in providing a safe and secure environment for individuals and property at the University. Additionally, the PSO performs initial investigations of incidents and reported crime, makes accurate and timely written reports of all activity, responds to emergencies, problems, and complaints, and conducts special duties as assigned.Salary/Rate: $19.00-$20.00; 40 hours per weekEssential Functions:Patrol grounds and buildings in assigned area, occupied or vacant, to deter and detect criminal activity, security breaches, safety hazards, maintenance problems and enforce the rules of the UniversityRespond to reported incidents and calls for service, takes necessary action appropriate for the situation according to guidelines established by the University and departmental policies and proceduresAssist victims of crimes with making a police complaint, as desired or requiredLock and unlock buildings and rooms according to schedules, authorization lists and upon requestWrite and submit complete, detailed, legible, and accurate reports in a timely manner, concerning incidents, accidents and calls for serviceEnforce campus traffic and parking regulations. Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic, provide information and directions, arrange assistance for motorists with mechanical problems, issue parking tickets and arrange towing of vehicles as necessaryAssist University officials, law enforcement agencies, fire, and other public safety officials in the performance of those duties in maintaining public safety on the campusFunction as the University's first responder to criminal incidents, fires, medical emergencies, chemical spills, natural disasters, and other emergencies on campusAttend and participate in department meetingsComplete training programs when scheduled, including programs held during regularly scheduled hours and outside regularly scheduled hours. Some training programs may require travelAvailable for additional work assignments outside regularly scheduled shifts, which may include security for special events, athletic contests, manpower shortages and weather/disaster emergenciesBe visible and alert at all timesGreet all guests, visitors, and community members politely and professionally in passingFollow protocol when responding to incident or crisis situationOther Duties & Responsibilities:Available for 24/7 365 on call responseBe pro cient in the use of various systems and software such as monitoring camera system, access control, re and trouble alarms and parking citation systemBe pro cient in the use of various computer systems and software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Google forms and spreadsheets and calendar and event databaseFoster inclusivity and empower the Department of Public Safety to be compassionate, responsive, and caringSustain and evolve relationships with campus programs and initiatives to build trust between Public Safety and the campus communityMaintain a safe working environment within and around campus facilities and associated equipmentSupports and assists in creating intersections for faculty, sta and students that will assist in transforming people s livesSupports and assists in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, sta , and studentsMaintains a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, sta and students and expanding access to the AU experienceMaintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environmentParticipates in all required assigned training, including safety training and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocolsE ective written and oral communication skillsContributes to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assignedQualifications-Educations & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Formal Education:The Public Safety Officer will hold a High school diploma or GED. NYS Licensed Security Guard or willing to successfully complete the NYS Security Guard Course and must remain licensed for employment. PSO must be of the highest character, possess excellent written and verbal skills, be able to work in a diverse environmentPreferred:Associate s degree in criminal justice, related discipline or specialized training in security and safety, or two years security experience in a university, or institutional setting. Police or Peace officer experience with certified academy training is preferredExperience:The Public Safety O cer must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have a working knowledge of technology used in the profession. NYS Security, NIMS/ICS, CPR/AED certification required. Preferred qualifications include working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
