Essential Functions
Job Summary
Responsible for providing security in the protection, safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors and property within the control and jurisdiction of a component institution of The University of Texas System; operates within the limits prescribed by the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, institutional rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act). Enforce the rules and regulations of the University of Texas System Administration pertaining to the safeguarding of students, employees, visitors, property, and buildings of the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Core Responsibilities
* Enforces the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the University of Texas System and the University.
* Conducts regular patrols (on foot, golf cart, motor vehicle to include a truck, and by bicycle if certified) of both the main and downtown campuses.
* Conducts guard tours of controlled spaces, patrols buildings, parking lots, and other UTSA controlled property to assists with asset protection, provide security presence and prevent crime.
* Patrols buildings and grounds to check for fires, water leaks, and potential security and safety hazards. Investigates and reports abnormalities.
* Assists with security surveys to look for safety and security deficiencies such as lighting, landscaping and safety concerns.
* Inspects emergency phones and other security equipment.
* Assists with emergency response and provides emergency assistance when needed.
* Provides security support for special events such as weddings, sporting events, concerts etc. by opening and closing facilities, conducting security sweeps, assigned fixed posts, bag checks, security camera surveillance etc.
* Provides customer service to the public by providing security escorts, motorist assistance; provides information and direction to students, employees, and visitors; directs traffic.
* Utilizes a handheld radio for communication to dispatch, supervisor and other Public Safety officers and Police.
* Writes electronic reports; takes observational field notes.
* Unlocks and secures buildings, classrooms in both public and non-public areas, reports issues regarding the function and maintenance of entries and exits to include doors, door locks and other security systems.
* Responds to calls for service, alarms, and /or observed behaviors. Provides requested services in a timely manner and in accordance with policies and procedures.
* Examines credentials of persons desiring to enter controlled areas.
* Attends meetings and training.
* Assist security service and police teams
* Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties to include, but not limited to, emergency recall and/or may be required to remain onsite or work extended hours during man-made or natural disasters and unusual occurrences on campus.
Required Qualifications
* High school graduate or equivalent.
* Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out his or her responsibilities and duties as a guard of The University of Texas System Police.
* Continued employment contingent upon completion of a required formal field training program and achievement of sufficient proficiency.
* Valid Texas State Driver's License.
* Must be a US Citizen.
* Eyesight and hearing shall be of sufficient acuity to accomplish the job duties described.
* Criminal Background Check (CBC), Drug Test and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
* Demonstrated ability to make frequent minor decisions and occasional decisions of some significance.
* Must have good communication skills.
* Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
* Must be able to use a computer, Microsoft word and other computer applications.
* Must be able to drive a truck, SUV, car and golf cart on campus and public roadways.
* Must be proficient with the operation of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
* Customer service and communications experience.

Working Conditions
Working Environment:
* Work involves a high degree of hazard normally associated with law enforcement.
* May be required to work either day or night on any one of three shifts with varying days off.
* Exposure to outside weather conditions.
* Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
* Required walking and standing shall be done without the aid of canes, crutches or similar tools.
* Public Safety Officers must be willing to work assigned shifts, which may include dayshift, evening shift, overnight midnight shifts and power shifts that cover the most populated times of the day at both Main campus and Downtown campus.
* Public Safety Officers are assigned to work varying shifts based on seniority to cover the campus 24/7 and shift change periods.
Physical Demands:
* Must be able to walk, climb stairs, stand, sit, both inside and outside areas for extended periods of time.
This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
