Duties

* Answers 911 calls, conducts emergency and non-emergency call processing using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) consoles or CAD capability through NG911 modernization, if applicable, and or Land Mobile Radios (LMR).

* Performs crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations.

* Determines required assets and dispatches appropriate police, fire, and EMS personnel and vehicles/apparatus.

* Operates supporting communication equipment including but not limited to administrative and direct line telephones.

* Maintains complete and accurate records, reports, and logs on all communication traffic, assigned vehicle movements, patient transport, personnel, and vehicle status in accordance with operational policies and procedures.

* Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

* Within 16 weeks from the date of employment, the incumbent will be required to demonstrate reasonable proficiency at locally established training guidelines on the use of E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio, and station alerting software and equipment.

* Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).

* Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.

* Incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.

* Incumbent must pass a pre-employment; fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.

* The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.

* The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Emergency Medical Dispatch based on the program standards at the location assigned.

* Incumbent must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on the program standards at the location assigned.

* Incumbent must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.

* Incumbent must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100,300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.

* The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training that is offered locally and pass in accordance with predetermined course requirements.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Answering emergency and/or non-emergency calls for police, fire, or ambulance assistance; 2) Dispatching emergency personnel as needed in accordance with priority level procedures; and 3) Operating communications software to perform dispatching duties such as: log calls, prepare reports of activities, and assist with medical dispatching until appropriate emergency units arrive. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Business Administration

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

In addition to the requirement above, this position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM) based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
